Writing Podcast Show Notes – PCI 334

As we continue getting back to the basics of podcasting, on today’s Podcast Insider we explore the value of — and offer tips for — show notes.

We hope you enjoy today’s episode of Podcast Insider; we’ve worked hard to ensure that you’re getting the best podcast knowledge. We’ll still be periodically having guests, so if you’re interested in being featured reach out to the team.

Today’s Hosts: Todd Cochrane and MacKenzie Bennett

Show notes describe your podcast: They are a quick synopsis of what your episode covers. Posted with your episode on your website, they show up in podcast apps (that is if you don’t change the app summary).

Include relevant links: They should offer access to the resources mentioned in the show and expand on the topics you’ve discussed.

A good place for a plug: The notes can also include info on upcoming episodes, events, merch, etc.

An SEO savior: Most podcasters leave a lot to be desired when including additional information or sources they mention in their episodes. Yet, you can show up in search results for your topic when you use keywords appropriately, write enough (word count) and properly title your episode.

Use templates; save time: We use templates for our podcast show notes to save us time each episode. We’ve even created show notepads for fans of pen and paper. Apps handle HTML and links differently, but most often utilize links nowadays, making it easy for listeners.

Get help: If you’re unfamiliar with or uncomfortable writing, there are resources to help — whether on a regular basis or the first few times. Virtual assistants, launch partners (such as Pro-Production) and similar features are a great way to get a feel for what you want for your show.

Including show notes summarizes your content, allows listeners to get the most out of your episode, benefits any ads/sponsorships you have and, overall, brings your audience back to wherever you’d like them to visit.

Show notes are something you must do each episode to advance your show. Although sometimes cumbersome, if you to use them to the best of their ability, it does get easier and offers a great ROI of your time.

________________

Show notes are the description of your episode, posted on your website and shown in podcast apps (that is if you don’t change the app summary). They contain relevant links and information to the episode, upcoming episodes, events, merch, etc. We’ve been using them for our show every episode since the beginning back in 2008 or so.

Show notes can be an SEO savior for podcasters. To be frank, most podcasters don’t do show notes justice and leave a lot to be desired with the additional information or sources they’re mentioning. Show notes are a really great way to gain new listeners overall but also for specific episodes. You can show up in search results for your topic when you use keywords appropriately, write enough (word count) and properly title your episode.

We use a template for our show notes and it saves us time each and every episode. We’ve even created show notepads for those that are fans of pen and paper. Apps handle HTML and links differently, but most often utilize links nowadays making it easy for listeners.

Regularly using show notes assists listeners get the most out of your content, is great and useful for any ads/sponsorships you have, and overall bringing your audience back to wherever you’d like them to visit.

If you’re unfamiliar with or uncomfortable writing, this is also something that someone can help you with – whether that is on a regular basis or just the first few times. Virtual assistants, launch partners, etc. are a great way to get a feel for what you want for your show. You have to do show notes each episode if you want to use them to the best of their ability, and it gets easier. Highly recommended that you use a template and or format so that you’re not overwhelmed each time.

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,320
You've invested this huge amount of time
recording this beautiful piece of art

2
00:00:04,320 --> 00:00:06,360
that you're gonna publish,
that you're very proud of.

3
00:00:06,360 --> 00:00:09,400
It's your baby maybe taking
a lot of time to edit it,

4
00:00:09,400 --> 00:00:14,240
and you've gotten it out there
and it just sits out there and

5
00:00:14,380 --> 00:00:16,000
you don't get a lot of traction.

6
00:00:17,270 --> 00:00:20,370
The show notes is a vehicle,

7
00:00:20,670 --> 00:00:25,370
one of the vehicles that is
gonna help you be recognized over

8
00:00:25,370 --> 00:00:30,050
time, that there's great original content
coming from your site in your brand.

9
00:00:30,870 --> 00:00:35,330
You are listening to Podcast Insider,
hosted by Mike Dell, Todd Cochran,

10
00:00:35,330 --> 00:00:37,890
and Mackenzie Bennett
from the Blueberry team,

00:00:38,560 --> 00:00:41,330
bringing you weekly insights, advice,

12
00:00:41,330 --> 00:00:44,330
and insider tips and
tricks to help you start,

13
00:00:44,640 --> 00:00:47,130
grow and thrive through podcasting.

14
00:00:47,480 --> 00:00:51,490
With all the support of your team
here at Blueberry Podcasting, welcome.

15
00:00:51,650 --> 00:00:52,610
Let's dive in.

16
00:00:53,200 --> 00:00:56,810
This is Todd Cochrane, CEO and
co-founder of Blueberry Podcasting.

17
00:00:56,870 --> 00:01:00,130
And I'm Mackenzie Bennett,
marketing specialist at Blueberry.

18
00:01:00,330 --> 00:01:04,370
Today, we're covering writing your
show notes and why it's important.

19
00:01:07,200 --> 00:01:10,850
I think this is a really good topic for
the two of us because you've been doing

20
00:01:10,880 --> 00:01:13,330
show notes for a very, very long time,

21
00:01:13,470 --> 00:01:17,090
and when I joined Blueberry
seven or so years ago,

22
00:01:17,090 --> 00:01:20,650
you introduced me to show notes
and gave me some best practices,

23
00:01:20,670 --> 00:01:25,290
and now I've just been doing them
basically weekly basis ever since.

24
00:01:26,110 --> 00:01:26,650
You know,

25
00:01:26,650 --> 00:01:31,330
show notes are one thing that
many podcasters truly hate doing.

26
00:01:31,880 --> 00:01:35,570
It's pretty evident as you
look through, you know,

27
00:01:35,650 --> 00:01:38,530
literally thousands of
episodes and you see a title,

28
00:01:38,530 --> 00:01:43,370
then very little information that
supports the title of the episode.

29
00:01:43,370 --> 00:01:43,830
And,

30
00:01:43,830 --> 00:01:48,730
and I'm not perfect by any means
because I know that my tech show

31
00:01:48,730 --> 00:01:53,730
that I do twice a week have
better show notes than the the

32
00:01:53,730 --> 00:01:57,450
media show I do with, um,
someone else once a week.

33
00:01:57,550 --> 00:02:02,050
And the really shows on
the, for me at least,

34
00:02:02,110 --> 00:02:06,890
I'm the response I get to by Google
what episodes are found and which

35
00:02:06,890 --> 00:02:11,370
ones are not. Because I've, I've said
this for many, many years, you know,

36
00:02:11,370 --> 00:02:14,930
we record this content for our audiences

37
00:02:15,740 --> 00:02:20,010
because many times our
audiences are already subscribed
and they're just looking

38
00:02:20,010 --> 00:02:20,890
at their, you know, their,

39
00:02:20,890 --> 00:02:24,490
their phone and they see the new
episode pop up and they watch.

40
00:02:24,900 --> 00:02:28,570
So they don't necessarily ever go back
to the website unless you give 'em a

41
00:02:28,570 --> 00:02:32,490
reason to. But the show
notes I've always said are,

42
00:02:32,490 --> 00:02:36,890
you're writing for Google
and basically trying to,

43
00:02:37,020 --> 00:02:39,170
to win the Google search result game.

44
00:02:39,970 --> 00:02:44,900
I think today what you see is that you can

45
00:02:44,900 --> 00:02:49,260
find any title of any podcast.
Almost universally, it's,

46
00:02:49,260 --> 00:02:50,093
it's not,

47
00:02:50,250 --> 00:02:54,100
most shows are able to be found by
their title if they're unique enough.

48
00:02:54,710 --> 00:02:58,980
If they cross over two or three different
names of two or three other shows,

49
00:02:59,160 --> 00:03:01,800
it might be in a small
list, but it usually,

50
00:03:01,800 --> 00:03:06,640
you can find that specific show
title. But when it comes to episodes,

51
00:03:07,290 --> 00:03:09,880
there's really a bit of an art to it.

52
00:03:09,980 --> 00:03:13,240
And sometimes the rewards
don't come until later.

53
00:03:14,130 --> 00:03:18,920
So oftentimes people get discouraged
and not do show notes correctly because

54
00:03:18,920 --> 00:03:23,400
they're not seeing the results they wanna
see very, very quickly. But, you know,

55
00:03:23,400 --> 00:03:24,960
I think really show notes.

56
00:03:24,960 --> 00:03:29,360
Start off with a great
title and today's episode,

57
00:03:29,500 --> 00:03:30,320
I'm probably,

58
00:03:30,320 --> 00:03:34,000
you're gonna put something in the title
about show notes and why it's important.

59
00:03:34,000 --> 00:03:36,880
I'm assuming that's what the title
this episode's gonna be. Yeah.

60
00:03:36,880 --> 00:03:38,080
I'll figure something out. Yeah.

61
00:03:38,680 --> 00:03:40,480
. So, you know,

62
00:03:41,010 --> 00:03:45,040
so if someone's googling show notes
are show notes important, you know,

63
00:03:45,040 --> 00:03:48,680
hopefully they'll find this
particular podcast episode.

64
00:03:48,680 --> 00:03:52,000
You may be the listener to the
shows contest this and find out.

65
00:03:52,540 --> 00:03:56,840
But really, when you write
the title, in my opinion,

66
00:03:56,980 --> 00:04:00,240
and again, they, everyone
has an opinion on this.

67
00:04:00,240 --> 00:04:05,160
The title has to really be the context
of what you're trying to convey from the,

68
00:04:05,160 --> 00:04:07,920
from the episode content,
or the most important thing.

69
00:04:08,310 --> 00:04:12,920
When I do my tech show and I talk about
23, 3 d, 23 different topics, ,

70
00:04:13,070 --> 00:04:16,360
I have to pick one of those topics as the
one that I think is gonna get the best

71
00:04:16,360 --> 00:04:20,560
bang as part of my, uh,
description of the episode.

72
00:04:20,980 --> 00:04:24,160
But what happens is, in my opinion,
is you write that good title,

73
00:04:24,160 --> 00:04:27,640
then you write a good,
uh, supporting paragraph.

74
00:04:28,460 --> 00:04:32,160
And the supporting paragraph
should really support the title.

75
00:04:32,730 --> 00:04:36,560
So that you're trying re you're really
trying to do is you're trying to train

76
00:04:36,560 --> 00:04:40,040
Google to say, oh, here's
the title of this post,

77
00:04:40,040 --> 00:04:42,880
which podcasts are technically post,

78
00:04:43,300 --> 00:04:45,200
but they're just with media attached.

79
00:04:45,620 --> 00:04:50,000
And here's what the author has
said is the context of this post.

80
00:04:50,380 --> 00:04:51,640
And if you do it right,

81
00:04:52,020 --> 00:04:55,240
you might end up the top search
results on the first page of Google.

82
00:04:55,240 --> 00:04:57,880
Now it's one continuous
page, but in the first,

83
00:04:58,250 --> 00:05:00,280
in the first two or three or four results,

84
00:05:00,820 --> 00:05:04,400
you don't always win
this battle with Google.

85
00:05:04,400 --> 00:05:09,280
Sometimes you don't even come up in
the top 20 because maybe the topic is

86
00:05:09,280 --> 00:05:14,080
so popular at that very time
that a hundred other people
have written blog posts

87
00:05:14,490 --> 00:05:19,360
or podcast episodes that are relative
to the exact topic and you're just kinda

88
00:05:19,360 --> 00:05:20,240
lost in the dust.

89
00:05:20,430 --> 00:05:25,240
Yeah, you should really be googling
your own, like what you wanna use,

90
00:05:25,240 --> 00:05:26,400
that's the title. ,

91
00:05:26,460 --> 00:05:30,880
you should be googling that to make sure
that that exact thing does not already

92
00:05:30,880 --> 00:05:33,080
exist or that it's, you know,

93
00:05:33,080 --> 00:05:38,000
showing up with results that are
similar to what you wanna show up

94
00:05:38,000 --> 00:05:42,920
with essentially because you have
that opportunity to put yourself out

95
00:05:42,920 --> 00:05:46,000
there and otherwise it,

96
00:05:46,000 --> 00:05:48,280
it's really a lost opportunity.

97
00:05:49,220 --> 00:05:49,640
And,

98
00:05:49,640 --> 00:05:53,680
and sometimes you're going to Google
something and you're gonna see Wall Street

99
00:05:53,680 --> 00:05:55,920
Journal, New York Times.
Mm-hmm. ,

100
00:05:55,920 --> 00:05:59,560
you're gonna see four or five links
and you are gonna go, no, no, no, no,

101
00:05:59,560 --> 00:06:04,080
not today. I'm not gonna use that
title because be honest with you,

102
00:06:04,080 --> 00:06:08,880
average podcaster will never ever
beat those mammoth publishing

103
00:06:08,880 --> 00:06:11,200
houses in the search ranking.

104
00:06:11,210 --> 00:06:14,200
So you still want to be
as precise as possible,

105
00:06:14,540 --> 00:06:19,480
but change that wording up a little
bit so that at least you have

106
00:06:19,480 --> 00:06:24,080
an opportunity for people
that are searching for that
specific topic to find you

107
00:06:24,080 --> 00:06:29,080
to find your episode. And what
really will happen is over time,

108
00:06:29,870 --> 00:06:34,560
that will be a lead magnet for you, is
people land on your webpages and say, oh,

109
00:06:34,560 --> 00:06:38,880
this is the topic I'm looking for. Oh,
by the way, there's a podcast and wow,

110
00:06:39,170 --> 00:06:44,160
there's a subscribe button to Spotify
or Apple or wherever they like to listen

111
00:06:44,160 --> 00:06:47,560
to their podcast, bam, they're
in and you have a new listener.

112
00:06:47,890 --> 00:06:50,960
So I've always used the show notes as,

113
00:06:51,130 --> 00:06:54,160
as almost a lead magnet. It's not perfect,

114
00:06:54,430 --> 00:06:59,160
it's just one of the multiple
tenants of things you have to do in

115
00:06:59,160 --> 00:07:02,920
podcasting to grow your show. And, um,

116
00:07:03,040 --> 00:07:05,800
Sonos can be a, a savior, an SEO savior,

117
00:07:06,580 --> 00:07:11,200
but a lot of podcasters don't take the
time and write a couple of paragraphs

118
00:07:11,200 --> 00:07:12,160
about that episode.

119
00:07:13,010 --> 00:07:14,960
They're highly underutilized. Oh.

120
00:07:14,960 --> 00:07:15,880
It's like.

121
00:07:16,010 --> 00:07:18,800
So much, personally,

122
00:07:18,870 --> 00:07:23,160
I look at them for most every
episode that I listen to of the show

123
00:07:23,690 --> 00:07:25,720
of, you know, whatever
show that I'm listening to,

124
00:07:26,230 --> 00:07:29,760
just because I know that they
should be there in the first place.

125
00:07:29,760 --> 00:07:33,360
But I am a person that a lot of the
time will wanna go back to the original

126
00:07:33,360 --> 00:07:37,840
source material that they are referencing,
that they're talking about, you know,

127
00:07:38,080 --> 00:07:41,200
whatever they brought up. I
probably do want to go look at that.

128
00:07:41,200 --> 00:07:44,600
That's one of the reasons why we
include every single link that we are

129
00:07:45,270 --> 00:07:49,960
discussing in our show notes every
week, because we don't wanna, you know,

130
00:07:50,150 --> 00:07:55,120
just put something out there into the
world that we are saying that we're

131
00:07:55,120 --> 00:07:57,000
speaking about based on this article.

132
00:07:57,000 --> 00:08:00,600
And then not actually link
to said article. Also,

133
00:08:00,600 --> 00:08:03,800
those links that you're
including help with SEO as well.

134
00:08:04,010 --> 00:08:07,440
So people are literally leaving, you know,

135
00:08:07,960 --> 00:08:12,850
numerous ways to help themselves
like off the table just because

136
00:08:12,850 --> 00:08:15,730
they are overwhelmed with
writing a lot of the time.

137
00:08:16,150 --> 00:08:20,250
And if you, if you have written
a good title, and again,

138
00:08:20,320 --> 00:08:24,530
a three to four sentences in a
paragraph that backs up the title,

139
00:08:24,530 --> 00:08:25,730
then maybe a few notes,

140
00:08:25,730 --> 00:08:29,610
maybe bought a guest or a little more
detail about what you talked about.

141
00:08:29,790 --> 00:08:32,810
You know, just kind of just give
them the synopsis, you know,

142
00:08:32,810 --> 00:08:37,450
just something quick human write it
because it's important to do that personal

143
00:08:37,450 --> 00:08:42,090
touch. And, you know, is an something
that will add to this is you,

144
00:08:42,090 --> 00:08:43,250
you've written good show notes.

145
00:08:43,250 --> 00:08:45,770
Maybe you've talked about your
guests linked to their bio,

146
00:08:45,770 --> 00:08:50,130
maybe they're on Wikipedia or you've
linked to their book or whatever you have

147
00:08:50,130 --> 00:08:50,820
done,

148
00:08:50,820 --> 00:08:55,520
or whatever those links that
you are reference in your show

149
00:08:55,520 --> 00:08:58,640
that support maybe the content
that you've created. Now,

150
00:08:58,640 --> 00:09:02,040
maybe you just as all original content,
maybe there's no outbound links,

151
00:09:02,660 --> 00:09:04,120
but if there is,

152
00:09:04,790 --> 00:09:09,040
then maybe you can get that guest to
say when you post your episode, say,

153
00:09:09,040 --> 00:09:11,200
here's my episode, can
you link back to it?

154
00:09:11,300 --> 00:09:16,240
And if you've done a good job with the
title and with the episode description

155
00:09:16,300 --> 00:09:17,000
and you know,

156
00:09:17,000 --> 00:09:20,960
concluded the bio and something nice
about the guest that makes them more

157
00:09:21,200 --> 00:09:26,040
inclined to link back to you either from
LinkedIn or Twitter or social or maybe

158
00:09:26,040 --> 00:09:27,840
from their own website, that's the best.

159
00:09:28,580 --> 00:09:31,480
And they get that bonus of
that reciprocal link back.

160
00:09:31,890 --> 00:09:35,960
If you have poor show notes
with almost nothing in them,

161
00:09:36,650 --> 00:09:41,280
whoever you may have talked to or
talked about or interviewed in the show,

162
00:09:41,430 --> 00:09:45,360
that gives them no incentive to link
back to you, they're gonna look at that.

163
00:09:45,690 --> 00:09:46,960
It doesn't look good.

164
00:09:47,200 --> 00:09:49,480
Right? They're building reputation,

165
00:09:49,480 --> 00:09:51,800
they're giving you reputation
by linking back to you.

166
00:09:52,210 --> 00:09:57,040
There's short term and
achievements and using show

167
00:09:57,040 --> 00:10:00,840
notes. Short term is probably
more along the lines of,

168
00:10:00,910 --> 00:10:05,560
I did really good for this one
specific episode, or this, you know,

169
00:10:05,560 --> 00:10:09,200
one episode that we did with such and
such guest really got us some good s e o

170
00:10:09,200 --> 00:10:10,600
because their name was in there.

171
00:10:10,600 --> 00:10:13,080
Or just the topic was super
relevant and we did like,

172
00:10:13,080 --> 00:10:16,400
we did a really awesome
job for this one episode.

173
00:10:16,400 --> 00:10:21,280
But if you do it consistently
over time and you build up all of

174
00:10:21,280 --> 00:10:25,700
those links and you build
up this reputation and start
to use some of the same

175
00:10:25,700 --> 00:10:30,300
keywords regularly, you're gonna
have a better shot of, you know,

176
00:10:30,300 --> 00:10:33,580
getting people to your website in general
on building up that s e o overall.

177
00:10:34,440 --> 00:10:38,420
Now we, we often look
at word count. What is,

178
00:10:38,420 --> 00:10:41,180
what is our goal word count
that we, we shoot for.

179
00:10:41,710 --> 00:10:46,340
So for show notes we try to
do around like 400 to 600

180
00:10:47,010 --> 00:10:51,700
just because like a usual
blog post should be like

181
00:10:51,700 --> 00:10:54,260
600 and more. So for this, you know,

182
00:10:54,260 --> 00:10:59,220
we don't want to completely say
the exact same thing that we

183
00:10:59,220 --> 00:11:00,780
said within the episode.

184
00:11:00,780 --> 00:11:05,540
We don't wanna have a cleaned
up transcript just in a
different way than what we

185
00:11:05,540 --> 00:11:07,980
said. So we try to aim for that.

186
00:11:08,520 --> 00:11:10,500
But some of the stuff that
you put in your show notes,

187
00:11:10,500 --> 00:11:15,220
like some of what we have is the exact
same that it was the week before.

188
00:11:15,580 --> 00:11:20,300
We're building up that, you
know, here, here's what you do,

189
00:11:20,300 --> 00:11:25,020
here's how you contact us here so that
you're not looking for it each time it is

190
00:11:25,020 --> 00:11:29,660
just there. The relevant
information is easily found.

191
00:11:30,030 --> 00:11:33,900
Another thing to consider is once
you're a number of episodes in,

192
00:11:34,580 --> 00:11:38,690
if there's something you've talked
about in this episode that references a

193
00:11:38,930 --> 00:11:39,550
previous episode,

194
00:11:39,550 --> 00:11:44,370
you can always link back to that
other episode and what it's really

195
00:11:44,370 --> 00:11:45,203
doing.

196
00:11:45,520 --> 00:11:46,490
Iteo loves that.

197
00:11:46,520 --> 00:11:50,810
Google, you're telling Google within
your own content, what I talked about,

198
00:11:50,810 --> 00:11:55,480
this references content within
my own website and over time that

199
00:11:55,480 --> 00:11:59,320
really germinates a good,
uh, a good score by Google.

200
00:12:00,100 --> 00:12:05,040
And again, i, I wanna emphasize
something I said in the beginning,

201
00:12:05,550 --> 00:12:10,480
90% of the people that subscribe to your
show that are listening on a regular

202
00:12:10,480 --> 00:12:14,920
basis are probably never gonna come
to your website unless you give them a

203
00:12:14,920 --> 00:12:18,080
reason to. And that reason maybe
come unsign up for the newsletter,

204
00:12:18,080 --> 00:12:19,920
maybe I got some new merch.

205
00:12:20,310 --> 00:12:24,160
They will probably not need to come back
to your website because they're gonna

206
00:12:24,160 --> 00:12:29,040
look at what's in your, in the Apple
podcast. They're gonna look at your notes.

207
00:12:29,040 --> 00:12:30,440
They may look in there for a link.

208
00:12:30,950 --> 00:12:33,760
They probably aren't gonna come
back to the website. But again,

209
00:12:33,760 --> 00:12:35,480
what you're building is this,

210
00:12:35,830 --> 00:12:40,600
this value of this brand on your.com. Now,

211
00:12:41,230 --> 00:12:46,040
I went the extra level because when
I started my podcast so many years

212
00:12:46,040 --> 00:12:48,560
ago, and I'm dating myself
here by saying this,

213
00:12:48,560 --> 00:12:51,000
but 18 years ago there was no
Facebook, there's no Twitter,

214
00:12:51,080 --> 00:12:52,920
there was no social media.

215
00:12:53,890 --> 00:12:58,480
So the only way that I was able
to get traffic to my website

216
00:12:58,740 --> 00:13:03,320
was really from continuing to
add content to the website.

217
00:13:03,370 --> 00:13:08,320
So I always think it's good if you
have extra and no one has extra time,

218
00:13:08,320 --> 00:13:12,720
but if you have extra time and you
can write an additional post about

219
00:13:13,200 --> 00:13:18,080
something that you're talking about
along your topic area of your show and

220
00:13:18,080 --> 00:13:22,560
just add that content with not a podcast
associate, just a regular blog post,

221
00:13:23,260 --> 00:13:27,080
you can accelerate this value
you get for your website.

222
00:13:27,550 --> 00:13:32,480
I know that's hard, I know that
can take a lot of time, but again,

223
00:13:32,480 --> 00:13:37,440
it can, it can add a good value to
the, to the brand, to your website, to,

224
00:13:37,440 --> 00:13:41,720
to get Google into the model of
here's fresh original content.

225
00:13:42,230 --> 00:13:45,880
I know everyone right now is
on the talking about chat,

226
00:13:45,910 --> 00:13:48,440
G B T and all these other
things that are out there.

227
00:13:49,070 --> 00:13:53,720
I caution you YouTube
use extreme caution when

228
00:13:54,040 --> 00:13:58,760
auto generating content for
your website or for your podcast

229
00:13:58,910 --> 00:13:59,743
post.

230
00:14:00,020 --> 00:14:04,320
You make sure you do some
plagiarism checking on those
articles that if you ever

231
00:14:04,320 --> 00:14:08,240
use one of those services to
create content for your website.

232
00:14:08,240 --> 00:14:12,880
Because so many of these now are
finding that just rep repurposing other

233
00:14:12,880 --> 00:14:17,000
people's content, changing a few words,
the stuff that's found on the internet.

234
00:14:17,370 --> 00:14:19,000
So be real careful out there.

235
00:14:19,000 --> 00:14:23,760
I'm a true believer in original human
written content is gonna win the day.

236
00:14:24,260 --> 00:14:29,080
Cuz at some point Google may say
they're just trying to scam the mm-hmm

237
00:14:29,080 --> 00:14:32,360
the search engines. Mm-hmm.
They're not doing it yet. And,

238
00:14:32,360 --> 00:14:35,800
and this is still developing
it's early days for all this.

239
00:14:36,230 --> 00:14:39,680
I think human written content is always
gonna win the day no matter what.

240
00:14:39,680 --> 00:14:41,240
But again, we template stuff,

241
00:14:41,240 --> 00:14:45,920
I template on my shows too
because it makes it easier.

242
00:14:45,920 --> 00:14:49,640
But yet we fill that a lot of that
template with original content that's.

243
00:14:49,640 --> 00:14:54,480
That is the template and the format
that we use every single week saves

244
00:14:54,480 --> 00:14:57,880
me so much time. So much thought.

245
00:14:58,390 --> 00:15:02,040
It's just so much easier to do with that,

246
00:15:02,110 --> 00:15:04,200
that I don't have to use, you know,

247
00:15:04,200 --> 00:15:09,120
something to assist me for the
actual written copy because I

248
00:15:09,120 --> 00:15:14,080
can easily fill it out. I mean, even
to the point of having that template,

249
00:15:14,080 --> 00:15:18,080
like you guys years and years
ago designed a show notes

250
00:15:18,530 --> 00:15:23,400
notepad that you write down on
so long ago that we still have

251
00:15:23,490 --> 00:15:28,240
to this day that people use because
it just helps you during the process.

252
00:15:28,240 --> 00:15:30,320
And it's also great to be able to use,

253
00:15:30,320 --> 00:15:34,720
like while you're recording to write
down any notes of something that you

254
00:15:34,790 --> 00:15:39,040
definitely wanna m mention in the
show notes, but you, you know,

255
00:15:39,340 --> 00:15:42,840
you don't wanna forget it, that
type of stuff. It's really,

256
00:15:42,840 --> 00:15:46,280
really easy to do this every time.

257
00:15:46,850 --> 00:15:48,880
If you have a template, if you don't,

258
00:15:48,880 --> 00:15:51,640
you're gonna get overwhelmed
and you're just not gonna do it.

259
00:15:52,020 --> 00:15:56,990
Now one tool that I absolutely
love is a tool called

260
00:15:56,990 --> 00:15:58,230
Grammarly. Now,

261
00:15:58,790 --> 00:16:03,030
Mackenzie will attest if I just write
something raw and don't take time to edit,

262
00:16:03,520 --> 00:16:04,630
it can be pretty bad.

263
00:16:04,920 --> 00:16:09,830
So I will take anything that I write
today and put it through Grammarly

264
00:16:09,830 --> 00:16:13,470
and let it clean it up. Basically
get my punctuation correct,

265
00:16:13,470 --> 00:16:17,510
tell me when I'm talking a passive
voice. All those things that, you know,

266
00:16:17,510 --> 00:16:21,990
an English teacher would get you on
if you turn in a paper and I'll let

267
00:16:21,990 --> 00:16:26,790
Grammarly make some edits for me and I
take its suggestions and then make sure

268
00:16:26,790 --> 00:16:27,750
it's the way I want it.

269
00:16:28,320 --> 00:16:33,270
It really allows me to sound better in

270
00:16:33,270 --> 00:16:36,790
the written word than what I would have
if I would've originally written it

271
00:16:36,790 --> 00:16:40,710
myself. And I'm, I'm a nerd,
I'm a geek, I think abstractly.

272
00:16:41,090 --> 00:16:44,630
I'm not a writer by profession.
Grammarly has helped me a lot.

273
00:16:45,010 --> 00:16:49,990
But you may be uncomfortable with
writing and this is something that

274
00:16:50,240 --> 00:16:54,950
someone can help you with. This
could be a fan of the show,

275
00:16:55,070 --> 00:16:58,470
could help you with show
notes and that's, you know,

276
00:16:58,470 --> 00:16:59,950
something you could consider.
Mm-hmm ,

277
00:17:00,000 --> 00:17:03,230
there's a lot of other options
out there. Virtual assistants.

278
00:17:03,860 --> 00:17:06,270
A co-host, you know,
co-host, yeah. Different,

279
00:17:06,270 --> 00:17:08,390
like different people on the show.

280
00:17:08,390 --> 00:17:13,270
Like I handle a lot of the writing on
this just because that's, you know,

281
00:17:13,270 --> 00:17:18,270
I excel at that in our group of
people and it makes it a lot easier

282
00:17:18,270 --> 00:17:20,270
to stick with what
you're trying, you know,

283
00:17:20,270 --> 00:17:21,750
the point that you're
trying to get across.

284
00:17:22,490 --> 00:17:24,910
And you may want to even
think about pro production.

285
00:17:24,910 --> 00:17:28,910
And we have a great pro production
team here@blueberryblueberrypro.com.

286
00:17:29,220 --> 00:17:33,550
They can help you with these things
as well. I think the key here is,

287
00:17:33,560 --> 00:17:37,830
is you've invested this huge amount of
time recording this beautiful piece of

288
00:17:37,830 --> 00:17:40,070
art that you're gonna publish
that you're very proud of.

289
00:17:40,070 --> 00:17:43,990
It's your baby maybe taking a lot of
time to edit it and you've gotten it out

290
00:17:43,990 --> 00:17:48,990
there and it just sits out
there and you don't get a lot,

291
00:17:49,040 --> 00:17:54,040
lot of traction. The
show notes is a vehicle,

292
00:17:54,340 --> 00:17:59,040
one of the vehicles that is
gonna help you be recognized over

293
00:17:59,040 --> 00:18:03,680
time that there's great original content
coming from your site in your brand.

294
00:18:04,030 --> 00:18:06,920
Sure, we're gonna be doing the social
pieces, we're gonna be Facebook,

295
00:18:06,920 --> 00:18:08,040
we're gonna be doing, you know,

296
00:18:08,040 --> 00:18:10,720
we're gonna be talking family
and friends and all that stuff.

297
00:18:11,060 --> 00:18:12,280
But at the same time,

298
00:18:12,280 --> 00:18:17,280
your show notes is a piece
that Google and others can chew

299
00:18:17,280 --> 00:18:20,640
on. Now Bing just made
some big announcements. I
haven't used Bing in years,

300
00:18:20,820 --> 00:18:24,840
but maybe Bing will start surfacing some
of this content in some of their new

301
00:18:24,840 --> 00:18:26,880
search engine and opportunities
that they're working on.

302
00:18:27,660 --> 00:18:32,110
Main thing is discovery and we're using
our website and our show notes for

303
00:18:32,110 --> 00:18:36,630
discovery of content and giving someone
in the minute or so they spend on your

304
00:18:36,630 --> 00:18:41,150
page after they have found you
via search results to say, Hmm,

305
00:18:41,740 --> 00:18:45,870
cool, I wanna hear more, don't
wanna read more, I wanna hear more.

306
00:18:46,170 --> 00:18:50,870
And as long as you make it easier for
them to subscribe to you from that same

307
00:18:50,940 --> 00:18:54,590
origin point, then you
may just gain a listener.

308
00:18:54,590 --> 00:18:55,950
And then when you gain a listener,

309
00:18:56,300 --> 00:19:00,830
that listener will tell their people
because that is how the number one way of

310
00:19:00,980 --> 00:19:02,990
throwing your show is, is word of mouth.

311
00:19:02,990 --> 00:19:05,750
But if you get someone that
comes in that says, wow,

312
00:19:05,750 --> 00:19:09,230
this is a great piece of a content,
they're gonna know two or three people,

313
00:19:09,230 --> 00:19:12,830
they're gonna share that. And then, you
know, it's just this, it's this spread.

314
00:19:13,400 --> 00:19:15,070
So you manually gain one,

315
00:19:15,070 --> 00:19:18,670
but you may gain 10 listeners just from
the simple fact that one person landed

316
00:19:18,670 --> 00:19:21,910
on your page and decided to take a
chance to listen to your content.

317
00:19:22,090 --> 00:19:26,670
And that's why also we'll have future
episodes where we're gonna talk about

318
00:19:27,210 --> 00:19:31,870
the, the really the art of getting them
into your episode and listening to your

319
00:19:31,870 --> 00:19:33,990
content and not wasting their time.

320
00:19:34,010 --> 00:19:36,630
But today we're definitely
focusing on the show.

321
00:19:36,630 --> 00:19:37,910
Notes. You know, one,

322
00:19:38,210 --> 00:19:42,670
one reason to also do your show notes
each week that we've kind of forgotten

323
00:19:42,670 --> 00:19:47,190
about is sometimes you are required
to based on whatever advertisement or

324
00:19:47,190 --> 00:19:48,710
sponsorship you have signed on for.

325
00:19:49,060 --> 00:19:49,670
That's.

326
00:19:49,670 --> 00:19:54,550
True. It's requirement for many
campaigns that you do. They give you,

327
00:19:54,550 --> 00:19:55,030
you know,

328
00:19:55,030 --> 00:20:00,030
you sign up with the local
restaurant and your town that

329
00:20:00,030 --> 00:20:02,070
you wanna give a discount
for and they say, okay,

330
00:20:02,070 --> 00:20:06,070
you have to link us on your
podcast. You have to say, you know,

331
00:20:06,070 --> 00:20:10,070
visit such and such website or use
this promo code or whatever it is.

332
00:20:10,070 --> 00:20:12,190
And you have to give
people access to that.

333
00:20:12,190 --> 00:20:15,950
And this is one of the ways that they
will track that too a lot of the time.

334
00:20:16,060 --> 00:20:16,550
Yeah,

335
00:20:16,550 --> 00:20:20,870
it'll be like maybe a
sponsored by Semicolon and
then some words in a hyperlink,

336
00:20:21,150 --> 00:20:23,710
whatever it may be. And the
good thing about this sponsor,

337
00:20:23,720 --> 00:20:26,230
so you can actually go back
and remove that if you want to.

338
00:20:26,230 --> 00:20:30,830
Mm-hmm . But the key here
is, is it really gives something that is,

339
00:20:31,130 --> 00:20:35,750
can be seen and indexed and, and
really you can grow from this,

340
00:20:35,750 --> 00:20:39,710
again, a lot of con so you're
gonna hear other people say,

341
00:20:39,710 --> 00:20:43,870
oh you don't need a website.
Okay, you may not need a website,

342
00:20:44,370 --> 00:20:49,120
but then you're just gonna have
to work that much harder to

343
00:20:49,930 --> 00:20:52,280
be heard, discovered and found.

344
00:20:52,890 --> 00:20:57,680
Because if you don't really have an
existing brand that you're building,

345
00:20:58,300 --> 00:21:02,760
you have to rely. So comp no
unless you're famous, you know,

346
00:21:02,760 --> 00:21:07,120
then maybe you don't need a website.
But if you look at all the top, top,

347
00:21:07,120 --> 00:21:11,360
top shows, find me one that doesn't have
a, uh, their own website and please,

348
00:21:11,360 --> 00:21:14,960
please send me an email and let me know
about it cuz I wanna see it because all

349
00:21:14,960 --> 00:21:18,880
the top shows have corresponding websites
in great show notes to go along with

350
00:21:18,880 --> 00:21:19,713
their podcast.

351
00:21:19,800 --> 00:21:23,320
There might be another thing that we
haven't really discussed the differences

352
00:21:23,320 --> 00:21:23,980
between.

353
00:21:23,980 --> 00:21:28,440
And that is show notes that you
see on your website of the full

354
00:21:28,720 --> 00:21:33,440
fully fledged, you know,
500 words show notes post.

355
00:21:33,540 --> 00:21:38,160
But there's also a summary
that you see in many podcast

356
00:21:38,270 --> 00:21:43,200
apps that can be different than
the entire show notes post on

357
00:21:43,200 --> 00:21:43,980
your website.

358
00:21:43,980 --> 00:21:48,920
And I think a lot of people might be
more open to having those different

359
00:21:48,920 --> 00:21:53,080
versions just so they don't
bombard people with the full

360
00:21:53,550 --> 00:21:57,960
show notes within the podcast app
of their, you know, listener choice.

361
00:21:57,960 --> 00:22:02,760
Like you can have something show
up different in Apple podcast app

362
00:22:02,760 --> 00:22:06,440
as opposed to what is gonna
show on your website. Sure.

363
00:22:06,440 --> 00:22:11,120
And I think that might be a good
introduction to getting started

364
00:22:11,170 --> 00:22:13,360
or saying, you know, use this,

365
00:22:13,940 --> 00:22:18,880
use the shorter version for what
you put in the summary and then go

366
00:22:18,880 --> 00:22:22,160
back and change the show notes
and improve those, or, you know,

367
00:22:22,160 --> 00:22:25,520
get more comfortable with those as you go.

368
00:22:25,740 --> 00:22:29,800
But something that you could probably
get more used to very quickly

369
00:22:30,570 --> 00:22:34,560
is just the, the more concise
version that the podcast app seen.

370
00:22:34,790 --> 00:22:35,280
Yeah.

371
00:22:35,280 --> 00:22:40,120
So there's a selection in both
the blueberry dashboard and also

372
00:22:40,170 --> 00:22:43,360
in Power press where you can set, uh,

373
00:22:43,360 --> 00:22:48,320
copy in alternate show notes for Apples
specifically doesn't carry over to all

374
00:22:48,320 --> 00:22:50,840
apps, but it definitely
carries over to Apple and,

375
00:22:50,840 --> 00:22:55,160
and a lot of the apps that's supported.
So that's an one of the Apple features,

376
00:22:55,490 --> 00:22:56,680
uh, often seen under,

377
00:22:56,680 --> 00:23:01,520
I believe the advanced tab both on
Blueberry dashboard and in Power Press.

378
00:23:02,060 --> 00:23:06,760
And the next thing we got coming is
the pro tip from the Blueberry Pro

379
00:23:06,760 --> 00:23:09,720
production team. Take it away.

380
00:23:11,390 --> 00:23:15,600
When the Canadian singer songwriter
Joni Mitchell released Doggy Dog in

381
00:23:15,840 --> 00:23:19,320
1985, many of her
hardcore fans freaked out.

382
00:23:19,580 --> 00:23:24,400
She was known for playing gentle
acoustic guitar and singing on the new

383
00:23:24,400 --> 00:23:27,720
album. She didn't play guitar
at all, someone else did.

384
00:23:27,720 --> 00:23:32,640
And it was a completely different
electric synth based sound.

385
00:23:33,210 --> 00:23:36,440
So I guess it was understandable
that fans were up in arms,

386
00:23:36,780 --> 00:23:41,600
but the album still sold copies
and exposed her to a new audience.

387
00:23:41,920 --> 00:23:45,160
Later on in her career, she turned
back to the more acoustic sound,

388
00:23:45,360 --> 00:23:49,080
but also moved deeper into
jazz and orchestral music,

389
00:23:49,080 --> 00:23:51,800
gaining new audiences along the way.

390
00:23:52,730 --> 00:23:56,560
If you dare change your
podcast show format, know this.

391
00:23:57,300 --> 00:23:59,440
Not everyone is going to like it.

392
00:23:59,710 --> 00:24:02,880
Some people might even invest
time in telling you why,

393
00:24:03,100 --> 00:24:06,800
and that's okay because
not everyone is for you.

394
00:24:07,650 --> 00:24:10,120
So if you are feeling creatively stuck,

395
00:24:10,320 --> 00:24:14,560
maybe a podcast style or format
change is a great next step.

396
00:24:14,950 --> 00:24:19,040
Here are seven points you might want
to consider before you make the move.

397
00:24:19,270 --> 00:24:23,440
Number one, who is your
podcast for, by the way,

398
00:24:23,440 --> 00:24:28,400
doing a podcast for you is a
legitimate answer. Number two,

399
00:24:28,870 --> 00:24:30,960
what are you trying to do with your show?

400
00:24:31,050 --> 00:24:35,160
Is there a specific result you
have in mind? Number three,

401
00:24:35,610 --> 00:24:36,760
if it's for business,

402
00:24:36,960 --> 00:24:40,760
think about the customer you want and
how you can meet them where they are

403
00:24:40,760 --> 00:24:42,960
today. Number four,

404
00:24:43,370 --> 00:24:46,760
if you're looking to create a
podcast that grows an income for you,

405
00:24:47,110 --> 00:24:52,000
what content do you need to make to
attract the people and sponsors you

406
00:24:52,000 --> 00:24:54,920
want along with you? Number five,

407
00:24:55,020 --> 00:24:59,800
ask the specific people you actually
like being around and enjoy serving

408
00:24:59,910 --> 00:25:03,440
what they think you're
best at. Number six,

409
00:25:04,190 --> 00:25:06,440
podcasters can be fickle.

410
00:25:06,670 --> 00:25:11,520
Commit to and refine your new
direction for at least three months so

411
00:25:11,520 --> 00:25:15,840
you can measure it and decide if you
want to revert back or change again.

412
00:25:16,860 --> 00:25:20,040
And number seven, good
news, it's a spoiler alert.

413
00:25:20,870 --> 00:25:25,640
Podcasting is agile in a way
that vinyl cassettes and CDs are

414
00:25:25,640 --> 00:25:29,000
not. So if elements of
your show don't sit well,

415
00:25:29,260 --> 00:25:32,560
you can reedit re rebuild and republish.

416
00:25:32,910 --> 00:25:36,960
It's not a final pressing
of a record. In 1985,

417
00:25:37,790 --> 00:25:41,640
I've been Toby Goodman from the pro team
here at Blueberry and if you need help

418
00:25:41,640 --> 00:25:46,120
with relaunching repositioning or
simply taking the weight off Time Hungry

419
00:25:46,330 --> 00:25:48,080
podcast post-production,

420
00:25:48,390 --> 00:25:52,240
come and say hi to us
over@blueberrypro.com.

421
00:25:54,650 --> 00:25:56,360
So unless we've got
anything more on show notes,

422
00:25:56,360 --> 00:25:58,560
I think this is gonna
wrap us up for this topic.

423
00:25:59,220 --> 00:26:03,560
And the best place to get more information
on show notes is within our show

424
00:26:03,560 --> 00:26:05,760
notes where we'll have links where
we've talked about this before.

425
00:26:06,510 --> 00:26:10,000
Very cool. Thank you for
listening in on our topic today.

426
00:26:10,190 --> 00:26:11,023
Thanks.

427
00:26:12,350 --> 00:26:16,280
Thanks for joining us. Come back
next week and in the meantime,

428
00:26:16,280 --> 00:26:20,920
head to podcast insider.com for
