Confidence to podcast
Question of the WeekQuestion (from Reddit): I need to get a good microphone but want to go with a USB to start with. Is it best to get something like the MV7 USB/XLR just in case I want to add a mixer in the future? Or can a just USB mic be OK? What other mics should I look at?
Answer: It’s best to get something you can grow with. The Shure MV7 is a great choice but if you want something a little cheaper, but still good, the Audio-Technica ATR-2100X and the Samson Q2U are good choices.

00:00:10,790 --> 00:00:13,890
Hey, very welcome to Podcast
Insider. My name is Todd Cochran.
2
00:00:13,890 --> 00:00:16,690
First I'm joined by Micah Hos, Mr.
Mike Dell. Mike, how you doing?
3
00:00:16,690 --> 00:00:20,970
Pretty good Up here in snowy northern
Michigan. We got dumped down.
4
00:00:21,580 --> 00:00:26,010
We got snow here too, and I went, had
my snow shoes put on my, uh, car today,
5
00:00:26,570 --> 00:00:31,090
snow tires on, so I'm ready for weather,
6
00:00:31,650 --> 00:00:34,570
whatever Mother Nature throws
us. And if you're somewhere warm,
7
00:00:34,570 --> 00:00:38,930
well think about us up here because,
uh, it looks like winter is,
8
00:00:39,080 --> 00:00:42,210
I feel it's like it's coming early.
I don't know about you, Mike, but.
9
00:00:42,210 --> 00:00:44,770
It just feels, yeah, it seems
a little early. And I, uh,
10
00:00:44,770 --> 00:00:48,890
I got a new snowblower this year and I
thought that would stave off the snow for
11
00:00:48,890 --> 00:00:49,723
a while. But.
12
00:00:50,010 --> 00:00:53,810
you jinx us. Hey, we've got some,
13
00:00:53,810 --> 00:00:56,210
some news. News is kinda
light right now. It's, uh,
14
00:00:56,210 --> 00:00:59,290
been that way for the past couple weeks
and I think everyone's just got their
15
00:00:59,290 --> 00:01:02,690
head down. And maybe, maybe the
economy's got a little bit to do with it.
16
00:01:02,690 --> 00:01:05,810
That's okay. We got a best practice.
We got some news from the company.
17
00:01:05,860 --> 00:01:09,290
We have a pro tip, and of
course, the question of the week,
18
00:01:15,450 --> 00:01:16,650
Right off the bat,
19
00:01:16,760 --> 00:01:21,650
some shows aka some shows
in app or being tagged.
20
00:01:22,190 --> 00:01:26,290
And, uh, what they're doing appears
is they're doing a, they're creating,
21
00:01:26,290 --> 00:01:29,730
we've known Apple's been doing this for
a while. They've been creating a, uh,
22
00:01:29,800 --> 00:01:33,730
a transcript of the shows. Now we
don't get access to that. No one does,
23
00:01:33,730 --> 00:01:37,490
but it looks like they're analyzing,
and I'm sure someone's gonna say ai,
24
00:01:37,550 --> 00:01:41,850
but some computer has been analyzing
that and they're starting to tag pod
25
00:01:42,250 --> 00:01:45,250
podcast episodes by
topics and interesting.
26
00:01:45,250 --> 00:01:47,810
They're linking back
the stuff in Wikipedia,
27
00:01:47,810 --> 00:01:50,690
which I don't understand
why they're doing that, but.
28
00:01:50,840 --> 00:01:54,770
Well, I guess it's as good a place
as any
29
00:01:54,770 --> 00:01:59,010
it is interesting that it's only some
James over at Pod News made some,
30
00:01:59,010 --> 00:02:03,690
made a tool where you can see if
your show was tagged or not. And, uh.
31
00:02:03,690 --> 00:02:06,170
Yeah, every, every, every
show I've looked at hasn't.
32
00:02:06,200 --> 00:02:07,850
Yeah, I haven't found any either.
33
00:02:07,980 --> 00:02:11,490
Haven't found any. So it's probably
the top shows they're doing this with.
34
00:02:11,490 --> 00:02:12,690
But yeah, it,
35
00:02:12,690 --> 00:02:17,610
it does show you that what
you say in your podcasts,
36
00:02:17,610 --> 00:02:20,290
really going forward is
gonna have an effect.
37
00:02:20,550 --> 00:02:25,050
And if you think about how you do
your content and how you break it up,
38
00:02:25,070 --> 00:02:29,930
and if you are not basically kinda
stating subject changes within your
39
00:02:29,930 --> 00:02:34,530
content, then there is probably the
potential that you can help the,
40
00:02:34,550 --> 00:02:38,250
the machine learning, right? When this
takes effect for your show by saying,
41
00:02:38,250 --> 00:02:40,250
okay, we've got some
news, talk about news,
42
00:02:40,250 --> 00:02:43,290
we've got some best practice like
here, we kind of break things up.
43
00:02:43,700 --> 00:02:47,610
So hopefully the machine
learner learning engine will,
44
00:02:47,610 --> 00:02:50,250
will be a little bit smarter.
And of course they're gonna.
45
00:02:50,320 --> 00:02:53,810
It's quite likely that other
outfits are doing this as well.
46
00:02:54,320 --> 00:02:59,050
I suspect Spotify and, uh, probably
Google and, you know, who knows. But, uh,
47
00:02:59,280 --> 00:03:02,480
you know, it's just so that they
can search within the audio.
48
00:03:02,630 --> 00:03:03,120
Yeah.
49
00:03:03,120 --> 00:03:07,560
We know that Google's been doing it and
Spotify's doing it more for what they
50
00:03:07,560 --> 00:03:11,520
term brand safety, but I think it's more
for advertised targeting. But anyway,
51
00:03:11,520 --> 00:03:13,200
we'll see what Apple develops with this.
52
00:03:13,200 --> 00:03:16,520
They haven't said anything publicly
bought it, but right there it goes.
53
00:03:16,520 --> 00:03:21,160
But Alex Bloomberg has left
Spotify slash Gilet Media. Well,
54
00:03:21,260 --> 00:03:23,160
you knew that was gonna happen because.
55
00:03:23,160 --> 00:03:23,993
Yeah.
56
00:03:24,070 --> 00:03:26,480
He's done his time over there. You know,
57
00:03:26,480 --> 00:03:29,680
it's one of those acquisition deals where
you will work for the next couple of
58
00:03:29,680 --> 00:03:30,760
years and yeah,
59
00:03:30,760 --> 00:03:33,240
he's done his time and he is out
Probably's got his money and run.
60
00:03:33,310 --> 00:03:34,520
Yeah, well, they, uh,
61
00:03:34,520 --> 00:03:38,840
they got paid 230 million for it
between him and his investors,
62
00:03:38,970 --> 00:03:41,600
so I'm sure he made out
pretty well, I would hope.
63
00:03:41,600 --> 00:03:43,120
Yeah, I would, I'd hope.
64
00:03:43,120 --> 00:03:47,400
So. This is a, a, a tweet
from, uh, Ben Mullen who,
65
00:03:47,400 --> 00:03:51,160
I don't know who that is, but, uh,
it's been reported a little bit,
66
00:03:51,160 --> 00:03:55,680
but I haven't found a, a actual story
about it. Just, uh, just the tweet there,
67
00:03:55,680 --> 00:03:56,120
so.
68
00:03:56,120 --> 00:03:59,400
Right. We'll see something about
welcome back or something like that,
69
00:03:59,400 --> 00:04:00,160
I think it said.
70
00:04:00,160 --> 00:04:02,240
Right. Yeah. Very good. Very.
71
00:04:02,240 --> 00:04:05,680
Good. Well, one of our partners, one
of our podcast partners, headliner,
72
00:04:05,680 --> 00:04:10,480
and if you are not familiar, we are
integrated with Headliner, um, Ben, for,
73
00:04:10,480 --> 00:04:11,640
for a long, long time.
74
00:04:11,640 --> 00:04:16,200
And you can go to your episode
details on dashboard to be able to,
75
00:04:16,330 --> 00:04:20,000
uh, to integrate and push stuff
over to Headliner for editing,
76
00:04:20,020 --> 00:04:24,200
but Headliner now allows people to
upload their entire episode YouTube,
77
00:04:24,200 --> 00:04:25,240
so that's cool. Yeah.
78
00:04:25,240 --> 00:04:29,280
Now this is limited to Pro
and enterprise subscribers,
79
00:04:29,280 --> 00:04:32,080
but I think anyone that signed
up over there is Pro right?
80
00:04:32,080 --> 00:04:33,080
Or they have three levels?
81
00:04:33,330 --> 00:04:37,200
Uh, well, I think you have to do the
paid one for a pro Pro, right? But, uh,
82
00:04:37,200 --> 00:04:41,720
yeah, any, uh, you know, the free
levels get so much per per month,
83
00:04:41,720 --> 00:04:45,560
and then if you pay them a little bit,
you get the Pro and a little bit more,
84
00:04:45,560 --> 00:04:48,880
you get the enterprise
and they have, you know,
85
00:04:49,070 --> 00:04:52,120
full automation even,
you know, if you want,
86
00:04:52,260 --> 00:04:57,000
you can have it automatically
post over there, I believe. But,
87
00:04:57,010 --> 00:05:01,360
uh, yeah, that's part of their
paid service and you know,
88
00:05:01,360 --> 00:05:05,440
YouTube is sort of dipping their
toes into podcasting more and more,
89
00:05:05,610 --> 00:05:09,000
so that may or may not become
important. Uh, you know, the,
90
00:05:09,050 --> 00:05:13,800
putting a real video over
there is probably a better
plan even for podcasters.
91
00:05:13,900 --> 00:05:14,320
But.
92
00:05:14,320 --> 00:05:18,040
Yeah. You know, everyone says you need
to be on YouTube, but here's the key.
93
00:05:18,260 --> 00:05:22,440
You know, we've looked at like the
top 200 shows in every category,
94
00:05:22,900 --> 00:05:25,720
and there's very few shows. There
are some mm-hmm.
95
00:05:25,720 --> 00:05:26,553
there are very, very shoes,
96
00:05:27,150 --> 00:05:31,760
very few shows that have big
audiences on YouTube that are complete
97
00:05:31,760 --> 00:05:35,280
trans transfer, right.
So, while I don't deny,
98
00:05:35,280 --> 00:05:39,400
you probably should have something
on YouTube mm-hmm.
99
00:05:39,550 --> 00:05:44,520
I've never listened to a podcast I
couldn't watch on YouTube. What's,
100
00:05:44,520 --> 00:05:45,680
what's the use really?
101
00:05:45,680 --> 00:05:48,360
And some people say it's more about
the search engine traffic. Well.
102
00:05:48,360 --> 00:05:49,520
Yeah, that's part of it.
103
00:05:50,000 --> 00:05:54,520
plus years and see very, very little,
104
00:05:54,670 --> 00:05:59,240
very, very little uptake even on my
video podcast. So, but I, you know, I,
105
00:05:59,310 --> 00:06:02,600
it's, it's really a podcast
and it's, it's, it's,
106
00:06:02,600 --> 00:06:06,040
but it's got a video
component. So again, um,
107
00:06:06,040 --> 00:06:10,960
I think your mileage is gonna vary.
It's not gonna hurt for sure, but, uh,
108
00:06:10,960 --> 00:06:13,680
if you wanna try it out with Headliner,
they can, they can push it over there.
109
00:06:13,680 --> 00:06:14,520
Hey, apple Podcast,
110
00:06:14,740 --> 00:06:18,800
and a matter of fact this is going on
today is hosting numerous webinars. Yep.
111
00:06:19,160 --> 00:06:22,240
November 17th and 18th. You, the
field list sedates in webinar topics,
112
00:06:22,460 --> 00:06:25,560
and they got topics such as
setting up subscriptions.
113
00:06:25,560 --> 00:06:30,160
I think that's important because
we're just about the finish line with
114
00:06:30,160 --> 00:06:32,080
Apple delegated delivery,
115
00:06:32,340 --> 00:06:36,720
and we've actually got a
number of podcasts that have
said, yes, we're opted in,
116
00:06:36,720 --> 00:06:40,800
we want to opt in for the, for the beta
test. Mm-hmm.
117
00:06:40,800 --> 00:06:45,800
if you've thought about doing a
premium podcast, this is a great, uh,
118
00:06:45,800 --> 00:06:47,640
event to be able to sign up for now,
119
00:06:48,100 --> 00:06:52,400
you may miss it because it's
today and tomorrow, but, uh,
120
00:06:52,400 --> 00:06:56,520
we're gonna be having some instructional
stuff on the website on how you can set
121
00:06:56,520 --> 00:06:57,090
up.
122
00:06:57,090 --> 00:07:00,960
Another bunch of 'em December
1st and second. Oh, okay.
123
00:07:00,970 --> 00:07:04,200
So I think this is gonna
be an ongoing series. Yeah.
124
00:07:04,200 --> 00:07:06,760
They have it again on the
eighth and 9th of December.
125
00:07:06,930 --> 00:07:10,640
So, okay. Yeah. So there's some dates
there where they can get in down the road,
126
00:07:10,640 --> 00:07:11,280
but, you know,
127
00:07:11,280 --> 00:07:15,720
something to think about on this Apple
delegated delivery or Apple premium for,
128
00:07:15,900 --> 00:07:18,560
for those, if you've been
on the Apple Podcast app,
129
00:07:18,610 --> 00:07:22,960
is you have the ability to either
sell or put an episode out early
130
00:07:23,820 --> 00:07:27,200
for your paying audience and
then have it released publicly.
131
00:07:27,450 --> 00:07:32,200
Or you can have a version of the
show that goes up maybe with no ads
132
00:07:32,200 --> 00:07:36,240
or promotions in it, and then you
can have a public side that does,
133
00:07:36,770 --> 00:07:41,160
or you can just publish a single episode
that's a premium that only the premium
134
00:07:41,560 --> 00:07:44,960
customers get. Um, and they go through
how to set up those subscriptions.
135
00:07:44,960 --> 00:07:47,560
And again, we'll have that in our
documentation when we have the,
136
00:07:47,560 --> 00:07:51,120
when we launch with the
delegated delivery, but we're
very, very close on that.
137
00:07:51,120 --> 00:07:54,080
Matter of fact, it's, it's essentially
finished. We're, we're testing it now.
138
00:07:54,080 --> 00:07:56,880
Yeah. We're just, uh, poking around
and seeing if we can break it yet,
139
00:07:56,880 --> 00:08:00,960
and Apples poking around making
sure they can't break it. So.
140
00:08:02,150 --> 00:08:04,280
I have to last laugh
out this next one, Mike.
141
00:08:04,280 --> 00:08:07,880
Spotify releases video podcasting
in 180 countries. Well,
142
00:08:07,880 --> 00:08:12,640
video podcasting has been available
on all platforms since the
143
00:08:12,640 --> 00:08:16,160
beginning of time and
podcasting go back to 2004 now,
144
00:08:16,160 --> 00:08:19,040
no one was doing it those
early, early days. Yeah.
145
00:08:19,060 --> 00:08:23,440
And a lot of that, but a lot of,
uh, apps now, don't, don't do video,
146
00:08:23,700 --> 00:08:28,440
but, you know, video podcasting has
been around as long as audio podcasting.
147
00:08:28,690 --> 00:08:31,720
So there are number of apps,
including Apple Podcasts,
148
00:08:31,720 --> 00:08:36,640
that you can have a true video podcast
where you have your video in an
149
00:08:36,780 --> 00:08:40,680
RSS feed in its own separate
listing on Apple Podcasts,
150
00:08:40,750 --> 00:08:44,800
overcast PocketCasts, I don't know,
all the opposite support video. Right.
151
00:08:44,800 --> 00:08:45,240
Some.
152
00:08:45,240 --> 00:08:48,720
Of them, a number of them do
153
00:08:48,870 --> 00:08:53,280
Yeah. A lot, lot of the podcast
2.0 apps, the new podcast apps do,
154
00:08:53,280 --> 00:08:58,040
but what they're calling video
podcasting is really a video show on
155
00:08:58,040 --> 00:09:00,720
Spotify because it, it
doesn't go anywhere else.
156
00:09:00,970 --> 00:09:04,840
No, it's not a, it's not a tie to an RSS
feed. It can't be distributed. Again,
157
00:09:04,840 --> 00:09:08,080
it is, it's a video show on Spotify,
158
00:09:08,340 --> 00:09:12,320
and of course it's only through their,
their hosting platform. But again,
159
00:09:12,320 --> 00:09:16,920
why do that when you can have
broad distribution everywhere
160
00:09:17,030 --> 00:09:20,960
mm-hmm.
video pod, a true video podcast, and I,
161
00:09:20,960 --> 00:09:25,000
and you know, there is value in doing
that. And here's the main value. Sure.
162
00:09:25,000 --> 00:09:28,440
You can put a video over on YouTube.
Sure. You can put a video over on Spotify.
163
00:09:28,440 --> 00:09:29,880
That's fine. Facebook.
164
00:09:30,120 --> 00:09:31,320
We're doing here. Yeah.
165
00:09:31,380 --> 00:09:35,680
All right. But if you have a video
podcast that's available as a podcast,
166
00:09:36,590 --> 00:09:39,640
it's yours still. You control
it, you get the stats,
167
00:09:39,640 --> 00:09:44,120
you get all the data where you're
not gonna get that data on Spotify,
168
00:09:44,460 --> 00:09:47,720
and you're gonna get the type of stats
YouTube allows, which are, you know,
169
00:09:47,720 --> 00:09:52,200
pretty decent. But it is, it's
different. It really, really is.
170
00:09:52,200 --> 00:09:56,440
But anyway, so I just kind of giggle
about some of this stuff sometimes,
171
00:09:56,440 --> 00:10:01,280
and a lot of times content creators
forget that podcasting is really audio
172
00:10:01,280 --> 00:10:03,640
video and actually, um,
173
00:10:03,640 --> 00:10:07,080
the enclosure types are much
more broad than even that.
174
00:10:07,080 --> 00:10:09,480
We don't need to even
to go into it, but Sure.
175
00:10:09,630 --> 00:10:13,640
Yeah, you can, you can, you can even
distribute eBooks and stuff, so That's.
176
00:10:13,640 --> 00:10:17,640
Right.
schedules beginning on November 19th,
177
00:10:17,640 --> 00:10:22,320
prepare for full delays until January
of 23. Right. So are they just,
178
00:10:22,320 --> 00:10:25,280
they're off, they're basically
kind of short this next week,
179
00:10:25,280 --> 00:10:27,720
and then they're on for a couple weeks
and then they're off for Christmas,
180
00:10:27,720 --> 00:10:28,220
right?
181
00:10:28,220 --> 00:10:31,600
Yep. That's what, uh, they've been saying
now. I don't know, I think they're,
182
00:10:31,600 --> 00:10:36,600
uh, process for ingesting new
shows is somewhat automated now,
183
00:10:36,770 --> 00:10:38,600
so that may not slow down.
184
00:10:39,030 --> 00:10:43,840
Well, you can show, you can be
submitted now Yeah. And be available.
185
00:10:44,100 --> 00:10:48,720
You just won't show up in search until
you've been approved. Right. Right.
186
00:10:48,720 --> 00:10:51,840
So you can have your podcast up,
you can have people subscribe to it,
187
00:10:51,840 --> 00:10:55,240
they can listen. They just, you
may not show up in search. Right.
188
00:10:55,240 --> 00:10:56,560
Which is another reason.
189
00:10:56,630 --> 00:10:59,480
That's why it's very important
to have your own website.
190
00:10:59,480 --> 00:11:03,400
That's why we give every
one of our customers a free
WordPress site that you can
191
00:11:03,400 --> 00:11:08,040
build your brand on and you can send
people back to or out from to subscribe to
192
00:11:08,040 --> 00:11:11,000
your show. There is a, an
article by the Verge saying,
193
00:11:11,000 --> 00:11:14,440
one in five Americans listen to podcast
Daily. Where'd they get that from?
194
00:11:14,670 --> 00:11:17,640
I believe from, uh, Edison. Wow.
195
00:11:17,870 --> 00:11:22,600
I saw that as a headline with, uh,
Edison as well. So I I'm pretty.
196
00:11:22,600 --> 00:11:27,000
Sure in five In five, listen, that's,
that leaves a lot of improvement. Let's.
197
00:11:27,000 --> 00:11:31,640
Let's, yeah. But 20 20%, you know,
that's pretty good considering,
198
00:11:31,900 --> 00:11:35,080
you know, how, how it was
going on, you know, going back,
199
00:11:35,310 --> 00:11:37,880
that's an increase according to Edison.
200
00:11:37,990 --> 00:11:39,360
Yeah. So let's,
201
00:11:39,360 --> 00:11:42,880
let's continue to promote podcasting
and get that number to two and five.
202
00:11:42,880 --> 00:11:45,520
We want, we want folks to
listen. Da, that's daily.
203
00:11:45,520 --> 00:11:46,760
That's the big difference here.
204
00:11:46,760 --> 00:11:47,240
Yeah. Well,
205
00:11:47,240 --> 00:11:51,880
there's a lot of awesome Daily news
podcasts that you can listen to that.
206
00:11:51,900 --> 00:11:54,360
But you don't have to listen,
listen to a daily news. No.
207
00:11:54,420 --> 00:11:58,960
You can fill your inventory
with shows that are not daily.
208
00:11:59,190 --> 00:12:03,560
Yeah. My, my phone is full
of there, so Yeah, for sure.
209
00:12:03,810 --> 00:12:07,520
So lots of stuff going on there, but
anyway, very, very cool. One in five.
210
00:12:07,740 --> 00:12:12,720
All right. Best practice time. I'm gonna
read this off and then we can go into,
211
00:12:12,720 --> 00:12:17,440
write your podcast and show notes for
the genre you're producing nonfiction
212
00:12:17,440 --> 00:12:19,600
writing lessons from the
Planet Money Podcast.
213
00:12:19,600 --> 00:12:22,800
This is an article about
writing your show notes. Then.
214
00:12:22,950 --> 00:12:24,720
Yeah, it's, uh, you know,
215
00:12:24,720 --> 00:12:29,040
they go into how they go about writing
the show notes and, and, you know,
216
00:12:29,040 --> 00:12:30,280
doing the, the research,
217
00:12:30,280 --> 00:12:34,840
but writing nonfiction in a
way that covers the subject
218
00:12:34,840 --> 00:12:37,720
well and works for seo. And, you know,
219
00:12:37,720 --> 00:12:40,440
they just give a lot of tips
on what they should, you know,
220
00:12:40,440 --> 00:12:43,160
what you should do on
yours. You know, they're,
221
00:12:43,160 --> 00:12:46,840
they're just talking about what they do
Right. Uh, in there. So they, you know,
222
00:12:46,840 --> 00:12:49,120
they have a whole bunch of
bullet points in here. And, uh,
223
00:12:49,210 --> 00:12:53,600
it was a pretty decent article, but
the whole, whole idea, you know,
224
00:12:53,600 --> 00:12:55,680
regardless of what the article says,
225
00:12:55,680 --> 00:12:59,280
the whole idea is make
your blog post for a,
226
00:12:59,280 --> 00:13:04,240
for search results, but b, also useful
for your human audience.
227
00:13:04,460 --> 00:13:08,120
you know, don't just stuff it with a
bunch of keywords and all that, but,
228
00:13:08,120 --> 00:13:10,000
you know, keep that in mind. Of course.
229
00:13:10,470 --> 00:13:14,160
I, you know, I've always said that you
record Peron, you're right for Google.
230
00:13:14,160 --> 00:13:19,000
Yeah. And that means good, good.
Show note. Good, good program title,
231
00:13:19,140 --> 00:13:22,240
and then a good backup
first paragraph to make,
232
00:13:22,310 --> 00:13:26,480
meet that title or promote that
title. And it's not necessarily,
233
00:13:26,660 --> 00:13:29,480
you don't have to be keyword stopping
when you're writing for Google.
234
00:13:29,480 --> 00:13:33,480
Google prefers you writing naturally.
What kinda leads into blueberry news.
235
00:13:39,780 --> 00:13:40,200
See,
236
00:13:40,200 --> 00:13:44,680
we've got a blog post by Merrill who
talks as well about podcast show notes.
237
00:13:44,680 --> 00:13:46,240
So it must be a theme right now.
238
00:13:46,270 --> 00:13:47,440
Yeah. Show notes day.
239
00:13:48,000 --> 00:13:50,520
are really, really important.
240
00:13:50,780 --> 00:13:55,200
You look at the show notes for this
podcast and you'll see that we've got an
241
00:13:55,200 --> 00:13:58,800
extensive show notes. And why do we
do that? Well, we want, you know,
242
00:13:58,800 --> 00:14:01,960
we want this to be indexed
and to be picked up. So, uh,
243
00:14:01,960 --> 00:14:04,840
definitely check out the
art, the blog post as well.
244
00:14:04,840 --> 00:14:08,560
And I, I find it handy for me
sometimes doing research on a topic.
245
00:14:08,910 --> 00:14:11,240
I'll go search at Podcast Insider,
246
00:14:11,240 --> 00:14:15,840
cuz I know we covered something and I
wanted to see that article again. And, uh,
247
00:14:15,840 --> 00:14:18,960
you know, that could help your
listeners do the same in your genre.
248
00:14:18,960 --> 00:14:20,320
That's true. Well,
249
00:14:20,320 --> 00:14:23,720
the blueberry team will be out Thursday
and Friday of next week for Thanksgiving
250
00:14:23,720 --> 00:14:26,720
and, and Black Friday. And, uh,
251
00:14:26,720 --> 00:14:28,920
please be patient as
we catch up on Monday.
252
00:14:29,190 --> 00:14:33,760
Always seem to find that people are
in maintenance mode over the, the,
253
00:14:33,760 --> 00:14:37,200
the Thanksgiving they get done
having, uh, here in the United States,
254
00:14:37,200 --> 00:14:40,680
at least they get done having their
Turkey and they go do their, uh,
255
00:14:40,680 --> 00:14:44,640
their nap after, after
lunch, and then they say, oh,
256
00:14:44,640 --> 00:14:47,520
what do I have to do today? I'm not
going shopping. I'm hanging out.
257
00:14:47,520 --> 00:14:50,480
And they get on the computer and
start messing with their show. Yeah.
258
00:14:50,480 --> 00:14:54,440
And we start, start getting support
tickets. So just be war. We,
259
00:14:54,440 --> 00:14:59,040
we may not respond until, you know, Sean
might pick us up, up over the weekend.
260
00:14:59,040 --> 00:14:59,600
Yeah. And I, I,
261
00:14:59,600 --> 00:15:03,040
and I usually poke my head in the door
at least once or twice during long
262
00:15:03,040 --> 00:15:03,860
weekends.
263
00:15:03,860 --> 00:15:07,080
And make sure things are good. But
again, we'll be out Thursday and Friday.
264
00:15:07,080 --> 00:15:09,640
We do make Friday a holiday here at, uh,
265
00:15:09,640 --> 00:15:13,960
blueberry podcasting because no one's
really working anyway on Friday. Yeah. So,
266
00:15:14,150 --> 00:15:18,760
anyway. Cool. All right. We've
got a pro tip from Toby and,
267
00:15:18,850 --> 00:15:22,120
uh, let's go ahead. It's
about competence to podcasts.
268
00:15:22,120 --> 00:15:23,400
Let's go ahead and hit that off.
269
00:15:28,330 --> 00:15:32,520
Hi, it's Toby Goodman here
today, the Confidence to Podcast.
270
00:15:33,430 --> 00:15:38,080
I've come to learn that there are a
few recurring themes podcasters say,
271
00:15:38,080 --> 00:15:42,360
hold them back from continuing
or even starting a podcast today.
272
00:15:42,360 --> 00:15:46,640
Confidence you wouldn't be the first
person to suffer from imposter syndrome.
273
00:15:47,040 --> 00:15:50,480
Questioning your credibility
and authority to host a podcast.
274
00:15:50,970 --> 00:15:54,240
If the voice in your head is
asking, who do you think you are,
275
00:15:54,460 --> 00:15:59,440
you have what's called the
human condition. So when
it comes to your podcast,
276
00:15:59,510 --> 00:16:03,320
keep this in mind. Your
podcast isn't for everyone.
277
00:16:03,610 --> 00:16:08,440
It can't be nothing anyone ever
really loved, was loved by everyone.
278
00:16:09,070 --> 00:16:12,360
I don't enjoy hot climates
and beach vacations,
279
00:16:12,580 --> 00:16:17,120
but the millions of beachfront hotels
around the world don't seem to care.
280
00:16:17,430 --> 00:16:20,600
It's okay if people
don't get your podcast.
281
00:16:21,370 --> 00:16:24,880
So I encourage you not to think of
your podcast listeners as people,
282
00:16:25,220 --> 00:16:28,680
but think of them as your
kind of people. When you do,
283
00:16:28,680 --> 00:16:33,400
it's way easier to make content
because you can see how these
284
00:16:33,400 --> 00:16:37,280
listeners and future listeners
are on your side. Look,
285
00:16:37,460 --> 00:16:41,280
I'm never gonna listen to a podcast
about being a vegan in Texas,
286
00:16:41,580 --> 00:16:46,280
but if that's your thing, don't let
a carnivorous Brit like me stop you.
287
00:16:46,620 --> 00:16:48,960
The thing is, the more
specific you can be,
288
00:16:49,260 --> 00:16:53,720
the more magnetic your podcast will
be. If you are a vegan in Texas,
289
00:16:53,790 --> 00:16:57,400
I imagine you're a pretty starved
for content for people like you.
290
00:16:57,860 --> 00:17:01,000
But let's take that negative
thought all the way down the road.
291
00:17:01,050 --> 00:17:05,120
Someone takes the time to let you
know they don't like your show.
292
00:17:05,280 --> 00:17:07,680
Think about it. Someone took the time,
293
00:17:07,790 --> 00:17:11,240
they will never get back to
let you know what they think.
294
00:17:11,940 --> 00:17:15,960
I'm not saying you need to respond
or engage with these kinds of people,
295
00:17:16,260 --> 00:17:20,840
but I am saying that alone is
proof that you are onto something.
296
00:17:21,210 --> 00:17:25,320
So keep the following phrase to hand
just in case someone tells you they don't
297
00:17:25,320 --> 00:17:26,640
like what you're doing with your podcast.
298
00:17:27,470 --> 00:17:30,040
Thanks for your feedback and
taking the time to listen,
299
00:17:30,040 --> 00:17:33,120
but I don't make this
podcast with you in mind.
300
00:17:33,500 --> 00:17:37,440
And my podcast exists because
I'm interested in being a vegan,
301
00:17:37,500 --> 00:17:42,480
not because I consider
myself the authority on all
elements of it. The thing is,
302
00:17:42,480 --> 00:17:47,120
we all have opinions, but when it comes
to it, how many of them really matter?
303
00:17:47,310 --> 00:17:50,320
When people take the time to
express an opinion in you,
304
00:17:50,620 --> 00:17:53,640
I'd argue it is because in
some way you matter to them.
305
00:17:53,810 --> 00:17:57,440
So don't let what others think or
say stop you from starting a podcast.
306
00:17:58,140 --> 00:18:00,200
I'm not gonna tell you podcasting is easy,
307
00:18:00,420 --> 00:18:02,920
but once you've started in the right way,
308
00:18:03,010 --> 00:18:07,880
it will only get easier and
you will build confidence for
309
00:18:08,120 --> 00:18:09,720
a non-judgmental helping hand.
310
00:18:09,760 --> 00:18:13,600
We've got everything you need to help
you get your podcast on the right track.
311
00:18:13,790 --> 00:18:17,520
Come and say hi over@blueberrypro.com.
312
00:18:22,100 --> 00:18:26,840
Hey Toby, thanks for the pro tip
and your confidence to podcast.
313
00:18:27,380 --> 00:18:29,240
All right, we got a question of the week.
314
00:18:31,230 --> 00:18:35,720
I need to get a good microphone, but
want to go with a USB to start with.
315
00:18:35,850 --> 00:18:40,840
Is it best to get something like
the M V seven USB XR just in
316
00:18:40,840 --> 00:18:42,600
case I want to add a mixer in the future,
317
00:18:42,930 --> 00:18:46,400
or can I just use a USB mic?
318
00:18:46,550 --> 00:18:48,920
What other mic should I look at? Well.
319
00:18:48,920 --> 00:18:49,760
There's a,
320
00:18:49,830 --> 00:18:54,760
a lot of mics out there that have
both and that I would suggest that
321
00:18:54,760 --> 00:18:59,480
because you never know, you might
want to add a roader or a Zoom, uh,
322
00:18:59,720 --> 00:19:04,560
mixer or a Mackey mixer or,
you know, any kinda XLR device.
323
00:19:04,860 --> 00:19:09,520
And it gives you that flexibility
in the future to, to grow with. And,
324
00:19:09,820 --> 00:19:14,480
you know, MV seven s Awesome. Mike,
you know, we're using the, uh, the,
325
00:19:14,540 --> 00:19:19,000
the, uh, professional version of that
microphone, both Todd and I here now,
326
00:19:19,540 --> 00:19:24,160
but, uh, the, uh, MV seven is awesome.
McKenzie just got one of those,
327
00:19:24,160 --> 00:19:28,880
that podcast Ments used it on a few
episodes here recently and it's an awesome
328
00:19:29,000 --> 00:19:32,480
Mike. Uh, you know, it's a little
pricey. A couple hundred bucks,
329
00:19:33,030 --> 00:19:35,160
a little cheaper would be the, uh,
330
00:19:35,160 --> 00:19:39,720
audio Technica ATR 2100 X,
which is their current model.
331
00:19:39,910 --> 00:19:42,960
That's a really good one for
probably under a hundred dollars.
332
00:19:43,180 --> 00:19:48,120
And then the Sampson, Q2 U is a
good one for I think their 50 or 60.
333
00:19:48,220 --> 00:19:49,160
And they all,
334
00:19:49,160 --> 00:19:53,760
all three of those microphones
have both USB and xlr.
335
00:19:53,970 --> 00:19:57,000
So you can use those in the
future, especially if, you know,
336
00:19:57,000 --> 00:20:00,000
if you go portable with a
portable recorder that has XLRs,
337
00:20:00,000 --> 00:20:02,920
you can grab the mic and
the portable recorder and,
338
00:20:02,920 --> 00:20:06,920
and go and not have to worry
about bringing a computer
if you don't want to. I,
339
00:20:07,030 --> 00:20:09,320
I think it's a good all
around choice to do both.
340
00:20:10,060 --> 00:20:11,840
The only challenge really is,
341
00:20:11,840 --> 00:20:16,560
is if you are thinking about adding an
in-house co-host mm-hmm.
342
00:20:16,560 --> 00:20:18,360
you're gonna be having
someone that's gonna be,
343
00:20:18,510 --> 00:20:23,500
you're gonna be recording together
from the get go and there's gonna be
344
00:20:23,500 --> 00:20:25,580
two of you in the same location,
345
00:20:25,650 --> 00:20:30,540
then I would say go with an
XLR and go the the roader
346
00:20:30,540 --> 00:20:30,770
route.
347
00:20:30,770 --> 00:20:33,460
Yeah. I'll let you know. And
then, and you can use a mic.
348
00:20:33,460 --> 00:20:37,100
If you start out with just, you
know, with the USB and XLR mic,
349
00:20:37,100 --> 00:20:39,860
you can use those mics in
that situation as well.
350
00:20:40,010 --> 00:20:40,500
Yeah.
351
00:20:40,500 --> 00:20:44,220
If you're gonna be a solo show or you
know that your cohost is always gonna be
352
00:20:44,220 --> 00:20:46,100
remote, then you're,
you're gonna be safe with,
353
00:20:46,100 --> 00:20:49,720
with the V seven or the
ATR or the Samsung q2.
354
00:20:49,920 --> 00:20:54,240
Those are all good choices. Mm-hmm.
355
00:20:54,510 --> 00:20:56,280
I always tell people in the beginning,
356
00:20:56,280 --> 00:21:01,240
maybe go the ATR or Q2 U route
in the beginning and then
357
00:21:01,240 --> 00:21:04,400
after some time after you,
you've been podcasting,
358
00:21:04,400 --> 00:21:07,760
well maybe think about the upgrade
to this year. MV seven. Yeah.
359
00:21:07,760 --> 00:21:12,160
Just because if you don't continue
then you don't have a big investment
360
00:21:12,380 --> 00:21:15,880
and you're not regretting the purchase
and having to put it on eBay or
361
00:21:15,880 --> 00:21:16,713
something. Right.
362
00:21:16,820 --> 00:21:18,920
Use it for Zoom calls
and other things too.
363
00:21:18,920 --> 00:21:22,680
So that's true. So if you got a question
you like us to answer on the show,
364
00:21:22,680 --> 00:21:25,440
drop an email to mike@blueberry.com.
365
00:21:25,720 --> 00:21:29,680
That's blueberry without the ease
audio, text or video. And we may use it.
366
00:21:29,680 --> 00:21:33,600
You can also post a question on the
blueberry podcasting Facebook group.
367
00:21:33,600 --> 00:21:38,200
Yeah. And I got today's question from
Reddit actually. So, you know, we, we,
368
00:21:38,430 --> 00:21:43,000
I go searching for them if I don't get
any in. So send some in, we'll use it.
369
00:21:43,000 --> 00:21:47,360
Awesome. Uh, best place for support
with any blueberry product or services,
370
00:21:47,360 --> 00:21:51,120
our ticket system over at
blueberry.com/support. Uh,
371
00:21:51,120 --> 00:21:55,040
tickets give the whole team access
rather than direct emails or calls.
372
00:21:55,460 --> 00:21:59,040
And we've been coming to you this week
from the new Media production studio in
373
00:21:59,040 --> 00:22:01,640
Coldwater, Michigan. And Mike Dell's
World Studio in Traverse City,
374
00:22:02,000 --> 00:22:06,600
Michigan produce a course by the blueberry
Pro production team@blueberrypro.com.
375
00:22:07,020 --> 00:22:10,960
And we'd really love you to fill
out our listener survey over at
376
00:22:10,960 --> 00:22:14,720
surveys.blueberry.com/podcast Insider.
377
00:22:14,780 --> 00:22:16,760
And if you wanna set up your own survey,
378
00:22:16,760 --> 00:22:19,160
you can do that as well
in the stat system.
379
00:22:19,410 --> 00:22:20,960
So one thing that I've, uh,
380
00:22:20,960 --> 00:22:25,280
had a little bit of a slow up on is
people that are looking for one-on-ones.
381
00:22:25,730 --> 00:22:28,800
So I make those available. I have, uh,
382
00:22:28,800 --> 00:22:32,480
a number of slots each week
to talk to our customers.
383
00:22:32,490 --> 00:22:36,400
So you can always schedule a one-on-one
with myself hosting customers only.
384
00:22:36,400 --> 00:22:38,520
And again, it's todd@blueberry.com.
385
00:22:38,820 --> 00:22:43,560
And I have no shortage of people
scheduling tech things with me. So, but,
386
00:22:43,560 --> 00:22:48,440
uh, I do have slots available. You
can schedule a check tech checkup, uh,
387
00:22:48,440 --> 00:22:53,120
for hosting customers only. Uh, you
can email me mike@blueberry.com.
388
00:22:53,120 --> 00:22:55,960
And you can of course send
us your, if you have one,
389
00:22:56,030 --> 00:22:59,280
a podcast sticker and a self
address stamped envelope,
390
00:22:59,280 --> 00:23:02,680
and we will send you a blueberry care
package or just send us an email to
391
00:23:02,840 --> 00:23:06,720
mackenzie@blueberry.com. Let her know
that you'd like a care package with the,
392
00:23:06,720 --> 00:23:10,000
your mailing address. And, uh,
it may take a couple of weeks,
393
00:23:10,000 --> 00:23:12,680
but she'll get some stuff
out to you.
394
00:23:12,680 --> 00:23:17,040
we've got lots of cool swag in the
office that, uh, none of it's aging,
395
00:23:17,040 --> 00:23:19,800
but of it's very, very cool and, uh,
396
00:23:19,800 --> 00:23:23,160
might as well send stuff out
to those of you that want it.
397
00:23:23,160 --> 00:23:24,440
If you do wanna send us a sticker,
398
00:23:24,580 --> 00:23:29,000
our mailing address is@podcastinsider.com
within the show notes of this podcast.
399
00:23:29,000 --> 00:23:29,440
Mm-hmm.
400
00:23:29,440 --> 00:23:33,280
a sticker, uh, Rick over there at, uh,
401
00:23:33,280 --> 00:23:37,640
drink with Rick
sticker here at home, so that was cool.
402
00:23:38,070 --> 00:23:41,760
I've got a sticker board that is
almost, actually, I think it's full.
403
00:23:41,760 --> 00:23:43,120
I gotta buy another one. You know,
404
00:23:43,120 --> 00:23:47,680
if you send a couple of stickers in with
your stuff and just designate who you
405
00:23:47,680 --> 00:23:49,240
want 'em to go to. Well, Adam, well,
406
00:23:49,240 --> 00:23:52,760
I'll add you to my sticker board once
I pick up the stickers from the office
407
00:23:52,760 --> 00:23:56,160
when I go down to Columbus. But anyway,
that's gonna wrap us up for the day.
408
00:23:56,160 --> 00:24:00,280
Thank you so much for listening. I, what
are we doing for Thanksgiving? Are we,
409
00:24:00,280 --> 00:24:01,920
uh, still doing another show next.
410
00:24:01,920 --> 00:24:06,440
Week? Uh, I think we may do something
early. Uh, we'll see. Uh, if not,
411
00:24:06,440 --> 00:24:08,080
we might take our first week off.
412
00:24:08,570 --> 00:24:10,520
Oh, all right. Well,
awesome. All right folks,
413
00:24:10,520 --> 00:24:12,920
thanks for being subscribed
and following the show.
414
00:24:12,920 --> 00:24:16,360
We'll see you next time here on the
podcast inside everyone. Take care.
