How Do You Consume Podcasts – PCI 481

How Do You Consume Podcasts?

Podcast consumption looks different for everyone—and it continues to change as audio, video and short-form content become more connected.

In this episode of Podcast Insider, Mike Dell, Dave Clements and MacKenzie Bennett share how they discover and consume podcasts. MacKenzie primarily listens through Apple Podcasts but often discovers new shows through social media. Dave has shifted from traditional podcast apps toward YouTube and audiobooks, while Mike maintains organized podcast playlists but also consumes much of his long-form content through YouTube.

The conversation explores how video can help podcasters become more discoverable, even when their audience ultimately prefers to listen. The team also discusses the value of short promotional clips, simple video workflows and experimenting with different formats without turning podcast production into a full-time job.

In This Episode

  • How podcast listening habits change over time
  • Why social media is becoming an important podcast discovery tool
  • The difference between how people discover and consume content
  • Why YouTube is increasingly part of the podcast ecosystem
  • Whether podcasters should create audio, video or both
  • Simple ways to create promotional video content
  • Why consistency and quality may matter more than publishing frequently
  • How podcasters can test new formats based on audience behavior

One key takeaway: podcasters should think like consumers. Experiment with audio, video and short-form content, pay attention to how your audience responds and focus your effort on the formats that work best for your show.

1
00:00:05.279 --> 00:00:07.700
- Welcome back to Podcast Insider.

2
00:00:08.080 --> 00:00:11.359
- I'm Mike Dell here at Blueberry, and, with

3
00:00:11.359 --> 00:00:12.980
- me as Dave and Mackenzie.

4
00:00:13.439 --> 00:00:14.320
- There you go. Dave,

5
00:00:15.164 --> 00:00:16.844
- tell them who you are. They probably forgot

6
00:00:16.844 --> 00:00:18.445
- since the last time they did one of

7
00:00:18.445 --> 00:00:18.945
- these.

8
00:00:19.725 --> 00:00:21.644
- Actually, if they've been watching YouTube, they see

9
00:00:21.644 --> 00:00:23.404
- me almost every week when I get a

10
00:00:23.404 --> 00:00:26.545
- video out. Yeah. I'm Dave Clements. I am,

11
00:00:27.005 --> 00:00:29.085
- one of the support team members, and I

12
00:00:29.085 --> 00:00:29.824
- am making

13
00:00:30.839 --> 00:00:31.579
- video content

14
00:00:32.119 --> 00:00:34.679
- for our YouTube channel. So go check that

15
00:00:34.679 --> 00:00:37.179
- out too. Alright. And, Mackenzie,

16
00:00:38.840 --> 00:00:39.340
- reintroduce

17
00:00:39.719 --> 00:00:42.039
- yourself. I'm sure everybody knows us, but let's

18
00:00:42.039 --> 00:00:43.799
- let's do this just in case we get

19
00:00:43.799 --> 00:00:44.700
- some new people.

20
00:00:45.094 --> 00:00:46.615
- I hope there's some people who don't know

21
00:00:46.615 --> 00:00:48.954
- me at this point listening to this podcast.

22
00:00:49.575 --> 00:00:51.734
- Mackenzie Bennett. I am director of marketing here

23
00:00:51.734 --> 00:00:52.695
- at Blueberry and,

24
00:00:53.895 --> 00:00:56.454
- cohost for Podcast Insider for many years now.

25
00:00:56.454 --> 00:00:59.690
- So, hopefully, we get some new listeners. Yeah.

26
00:00:59.690 --> 00:01:01.390
- We as you guys know,

27
00:01:01.929 --> 00:01:03.850
- that have been with us all along, we

28
00:01:03.850 --> 00:01:05.150
- took a bit of a hiatus.

29
00:01:06.329 --> 00:01:08.890
- We're revamping the show a little bit and,

30
00:01:09.290 --> 00:01:10.189
- being less,

31
00:01:11.715 --> 00:01:14.994
- techy, geeky, and preachy and, just having a

32
00:01:14.994 --> 00:01:15.494
- conversation.

33
00:01:15.875 --> 00:01:17.875
- And, Dave came up with a really good

34
00:01:17.875 --> 00:01:19.474
- topic for this episode,

35
00:01:20.834 --> 00:01:22.215
- that, you know,

36
00:01:22.674 --> 00:01:25.340
- for a pod caster, this is also kinda

37
00:01:25.340 --> 00:01:27.579
- good things to know about your audience. So

38
00:01:27.579 --> 00:01:29.659
- if you can figure it out what they're

39
00:01:29.659 --> 00:01:30.159
- doing,

40
00:01:30.859 --> 00:01:34.299
- you can, adapt what you're doing to, what

41
00:01:34.299 --> 00:01:36.859
- works for them. So we're gonna be talking

42
00:01:36.859 --> 00:01:37.359
- about

43
00:01:38.534 --> 00:01:41.575
- how we consume podcasts. And I and I

44
00:01:41.575 --> 00:01:44.694
- hesitate to to say the word listen because

45
00:01:44.694 --> 00:01:47.415
- there's more to podcasting these days than just

46
00:01:47.415 --> 00:01:47.915
- listening.

47
00:01:48.454 --> 00:01:50.075
- It's much to my chagrin,

48
00:01:50.614 --> 00:01:51.114
- but

49
00:01:51.734 --> 00:01:53.354
- it's okay. You know?

50
00:01:54.010 --> 00:01:54.510
- So

51
00:01:55.049 --> 00:01:56.829
- how do you consume podcast?

52
00:01:57.209 --> 00:01:58.270
- And, I guess,

53
00:01:58.890 --> 00:01:59.390
- Mackenzie,

54
00:01:59.850 --> 00:02:01.390
- I think, probably best

55
00:02:01.930 --> 00:02:03.150
- to start with you.

56
00:02:03.530 --> 00:02:04.030
- Okay.

57
00:02:04.329 --> 00:02:05.049
- Yeah. I

58
00:02:06.194 --> 00:02:08.615
- I've always been a bit of an oddball

59
00:02:08.754 --> 00:02:10.995
- in the blueberry group, I feel like. Yeah.

60
00:02:10.995 --> 00:02:13.074
- Oddball. You can send the sentence there. No.

61
00:02:13.074 --> 00:02:14.594
- I'm kidding. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's good. That's

62
00:02:14.594 --> 00:02:15.094
- perfect.

63
00:02:16.594 --> 00:02:17.655
- Podcast done.

64
00:02:20.389 --> 00:02:22.650
- I I have never been a subscriber,

65
00:02:23.110 --> 00:02:23.610
- so

66
00:02:23.909 --> 00:02:26.150
- I am not subscribed to any podcast out

67
00:02:26.150 --> 00:02:26.650
- there.

68
00:02:27.189 --> 00:02:29.750
- Following some of the other apps? Yeah. Ex

69
00:02:29.909 --> 00:02:30.810
- yeah. Exactly.

70
00:02:31.110 --> 00:02:32.250
- I have never been

71
00:02:34.305 --> 00:02:34.805
- connected

72
00:02:35.264 --> 00:02:38.084
- to a show in that, you know, automated

73
00:02:38.144 --> 00:02:39.764
- way, I guess you could say.

74
00:02:40.384 --> 00:02:41.685
- So I just

75
00:02:43.104 --> 00:02:44.965
- typically would find the show

76
00:02:45.264 --> 00:02:46.405
- on social media

77
00:02:47.025 --> 00:02:47.525
- or,

78
00:02:49.389 --> 00:02:50.770
- I mean, back in the day,

79
00:02:51.469 --> 00:02:54.510
- I listened to like, I I started listening

80
00:02:54.510 --> 00:02:56.290
- to podcasts because of NPR.

81
00:02:56.909 --> 00:02:57.409
- So

82
00:02:57.790 --> 00:02:59.650
- that was just like I was listening,

83
00:03:00.270 --> 00:03:01.250
- to their radio

84
00:03:01.914 --> 00:03:03.675
- and they got me on there by talking

85
00:03:03.675 --> 00:03:04.574
- about the shows.

86
00:03:05.034 --> 00:03:05.534
- But

87
00:03:06.155 --> 00:03:07.055
- I am mainly

88
00:03:08.395 --> 00:03:10.474
- and I'd say mainly when I say, like,

89
00:03:10.474 --> 00:03:12.155
- 99.9%

90
00:03:12.155 --> 00:03:14.014
- of the podcasts that I consume,

91
00:03:15.594 --> 00:03:18.469
- are through Apple Podcasts with just the audio.

92
00:03:18.770 --> 00:03:19.270
- But

93
00:03:19.730 --> 00:03:21.990
- I'm finding it through social probably.

94
00:03:22.930 --> 00:03:24.629
- A friend recommended it maybe.

95
00:03:24.930 --> 00:03:26.069
- I heard about it

96
00:03:26.530 --> 00:03:27.590
- on some interview

97
00:03:27.969 --> 00:03:28.469
- somewhere,

98
00:03:30.164 --> 00:03:32.185
- or I found it in the

99
00:03:32.645 --> 00:03:33.145
- directory,

100
00:03:33.604 --> 00:03:34.745
- like, through Apple.

101
00:03:36.564 --> 00:03:37.444
- Through, like, the

102
00:03:38.084 --> 00:03:40.724
- you know, their algorithms have gotten better or

103
00:03:40.724 --> 00:03:41.224
- worse,

104
00:03:41.525 --> 00:03:42.344
- whatever you

105
00:03:42.650 --> 00:03:45.050
- whatever you think depending on how yours shows

106
00:03:45.050 --> 00:03:47.050
- up. But, you know, it's I think it's

107
00:03:47.050 --> 00:03:49.469
- definitely done both over the years, especially with

108
00:03:50.090 --> 00:03:50.590
- AI

109
00:03:51.050 --> 00:03:52.990
- taking over every algorithm nowadays.

110
00:03:54.010 --> 00:03:54.510
- So

111
00:03:54.810 --> 00:03:55.310
- generally,

112
00:03:56.134 --> 00:03:57.034
- that's how I listen

113
00:03:57.734 --> 00:03:59.495
- to podcasts. And I say listen because that

114
00:03:59.495 --> 00:04:00.775
- is the majority of the way that I

115
00:04:00.775 --> 00:04:02.614
- consume them. Do do you listen to a

116
00:04:02.614 --> 00:04:03.594
- lot of podcasts?

117
00:04:04.614 --> 00:04:06.234
- So I go through binging.

118
00:04:07.414 --> 00:04:10.020
- During the summer when I'm maybe in the

119
00:04:10.020 --> 00:04:10.840
- car more,

120
00:04:11.540 --> 00:04:13.319
- going on trips and whatnot,

121
00:04:13.939 --> 00:04:15.080
- yes. For sure.

122
00:04:16.580 --> 00:04:19.139
- I'd say spring and fall, not so much.

123
00:04:19.139 --> 00:04:20.519
- And then winter again,

124
00:04:21.459 --> 00:04:23.699
- maybe with some holidays or just like being

125
00:04:23.699 --> 00:04:24.600
- cooped up,

126
00:04:25.495 --> 00:04:26.235
- I will,

127
00:04:26.615 --> 00:04:28.314
- but I'll listen to them,

128
00:04:31.495 --> 00:04:33.254
- like once or twice a week at this

129
00:04:33.254 --> 00:04:33.754
- point,

130
00:04:34.294 --> 00:04:36.394
- for like random episodes. I'm not

131
00:04:37.349 --> 00:04:39.990
- solely invested in, like, a handful of shows

132
00:04:39.990 --> 00:04:41.829
- at the moment. I just there's so much

133
00:04:41.829 --> 00:04:42.329
- content.

134
00:04:42.949 --> 00:04:45.849
- Yes. There's a lot of content and,

135
00:04:46.310 --> 00:04:49.189
- you know, finding new stuff. You know? Like,

136
00:04:49.189 --> 00:04:51.129
- I'll I'll go in spurts, you know, just

137
00:04:51.634 --> 00:04:53.475
- where I'll listen to a lot of new

138
00:04:53.475 --> 00:04:55.555
- podcasts, and then I don't listen to very

139
00:04:55.555 --> 00:04:57.314
- many at all. And, you know, I have

140
00:04:57.314 --> 00:04:59.415
- my core bunch. But Mhmm.

141
00:05:00.115 --> 00:05:01.975
- So but, yeah, that makes sense.

142
00:05:02.514 --> 00:05:05.490
- And that's kinda you know, we get these

143
00:05:05.490 --> 00:05:08.529
- tech, you know, tech support calls and and

144
00:05:08.529 --> 00:05:10.370
- emails and what, you know, how come my,

145
00:05:10.770 --> 00:05:13.490
- listenership's down this month or up this month

146
00:05:13.490 --> 00:05:15.350
- or, you know, we get both questions.

147
00:05:16.129 --> 00:05:17.990
- And a lot of that is cyclic.

148
00:05:18.314 --> 00:05:18.975
- You know, your

149
00:05:19.595 --> 00:05:20.495
- core audience,

150
00:05:22.314 --> 00:05:23.915
- you know, maybe they got better things to

151
00:05:23.915 --> 00:05:25.915
- do. You know, like, the beginning of summer

152
00:05:25.915 --> 00:05:26.814
- is always,

153
00:05:27.754 --> 00:05:30.095
- you know, at least in the Northern Hemisphere,

154
00:05:31.459 --> 00:05:33.800
- beginning of summer is always a slow period,

155
00:05:33.860 --> 00:05:36.100
- you know, both in, you know, our support

156
00:05:36.100 --> 00:05:36.539
- calls,

157
00:05:36.979 --> 00:05:39.959
- podcast listening in general, new show startups,

158
00:05:40.339 --> 00:05:41.319
- all that stuff

159
00:05:42.180 --> 00:05:44.600
- kinda takes a break in June and July

160
00:05:44.660 --> 00:05:46.875
- and then starts to roll back

161
00:05:47.415 --> 00:05:49.915
- in, you know, octo or August, September,

162
00:05:51.014 --> 00:05:52.615
- October for sure. But,

163
00:05:53.894 --> 00:05:55.035
- anyway so,

164
00:05:55.574 --> 00:05:57.435
- Dave, how how do you consume

165
00:05:57.814 --> 00:05:58.314
- podcasts?

166
00:06:01.149 --> 00:06:03.389
- You know, my my listening has changed a

167
00:06:03.389 --> 00:06:03.889
- lot.

168
00:06:04.589 --> 00:06:04.910
- I've

169
00:06:05.790 --> 00:06:08.290
- I know I've been listening to podcasts for

170
00:06:08.910 --> 00:06:10.509
- a long time. Like, I've been doing this

171
00:06:10.509 --> 00:06:12.509
- for almost fifteen years, but I've been listening

172
00:06:12.509 --> 00:06:14.029
- for at least a couple years longer than

173
00:06:14.029 --> 00:06:14.504
- that.

174
00:06:14.985 --> 00:06:15.485
- And

175
00:06:16.425 --> 00:06:16.925
- I

176
00:06:17.944 --> 00:06:18.764
- used to,

177
00:06:19.944 --> 00:06:22.345
- like, if I was on, at the time,

178
00:06:22.345 --> 00:06:24.185
- Twitter and somebody was like, yeah. I got

179
00:06:24.185 --> 00:06:25.485
- a podcast. Immediately,

180
00:06:25.865 --> 00:06:29.110
- subscribe, listen to whatever episodes were out. Again,

181
00:06:29.110 --> 00:06:31.189
- kinda like Mackenzie, like, I would binge, except

182
00:06:31.189 --> 00:06:32.949
- I would stay subscribed because it was like,

183
00:06:32.949 --> 00:06:35.269
- oh, I gotta get the next one. So

184
00:06:35.269 --> 00:06:37.289
- at some point, I probably had,

185
00:06:38.229 --> 00:06:40.970
- I don't know, like, a 100 different shows

186
00:06:42.125 --> 00:06:44.444
- that I was subscribed to. And then I

187
00:06:44.444 --> 00:06:46.925
- couldn't keep up, so I deleted everything. And

188
00:06:46.925 --> 00:06:48.925
- then I go back and find new shows

189
00:06:48.925 --> 00:06:51.185
- or find the same old shows again.

190
00:06:52.524 --> 00:06:53.024
- Primarily,

191
00:06:54.710 --> 00:06:55.530
- I was

192
00:06:56.069 --> 00:06:56.569
- using,

193
00:06:59.590 --> 00:07:02.069
- I've totally forgot what it's called. Oh, Podcast

194
00:07:02.069 --> 00:07:02.569
- Addict.

195
00:07:03.030 --> 00:07:04.710
- Yep. And then when I went all in

196
00:07:04.710 --> 00:07:05.370
- on Apple,

197
00:07:06.150 --> 00:07:07.910
- I did not use the Apple Podcasts app.

198
00:07:07.910 --> 00:07:08.970
- I use Overcast.

199
00:07:09.615 --> 00:07:10.115
- Mhmm.

200
00:07:11.615 --> 00:07:14.095
- And now, I'm kind of in this weird

201
00:07:14.254 --> 00:07:16.495
- and this is where I can definitely connect

202
00:07:16.495 --> 00:07:16.995
- with

203
00:07:17.375 --> 00:07:20.254
- the overall industry vibe of going more toward

204
00:07:20.254 --> 00:07:24.115
- video. I tend to listen to stuff more

205
00:07:24.980 --> 00:07:25.959
- on YouTube,

206
00:07:27.139 --> 00:07:27.639
- which

207
00:07:28.100 --> 00:07:29.240
- feels very,

208
00:07:32.899 --> 00:07:33.399
- blasphemous,

209
00:07:34.259 --> 00:07:34.759
- because,

210
00:07:35.220 --> 00:07:37.879
- you know, I've always been an audio podcast

211
00:07:38.504 --> 00:07:39.004
- guy.

212
00:07:39.705 --> 00:07:41.305
- But a lot of the content I consume

213
00:07:41.305 --> 00:07:43.545
- is on YouTube. And, like, literally before we

214
00:07:43.545 --> 00:07:44.444
- started recording,

215
00:07:44.745 --> 00:07:47.384
- I was working on some stuff. And I

216
00:07:47.384 --> 00:07:50.425
- had a YouTube video playing on my phone,

217
00:07:50.425 --> 00:07:52.264
- and I was just listening to it Right.

218
00:07:52.425 --> 00:07:53.645
- While doing my work.

219
00:07:54.610 --> 00:07:57.110
- So that's shifted a lot for me.

220
00:07:57.490 --> 00:07:58.710
- And I will say

221
00:07:59.170 --> 00:07:59.670
- that

222
00:08:00.689 --> 00:08:03.089
- I don't listen to near as many shows

223
00:08:03.089 --> 00:08:05.330
- as I used to. And Mhmm. Now those

224
00:08:05.330 --> 00:08:08.550
- have almost been replaced with audiobooks or YouTube.

225
00:08:09.904 --> 00:08:12.225
- There are some shows that I still am

226
00:08:12.225 --> 00:08:14.384
- subscribed to that I'll listen to every once

227
00:08:14.384 --> 00:08:16.545
- in a while. So I'm kind of in

228
00:08:16.545 --> 00:08:19.185
- a dip era right now as far as

229
00:08:19.185 --> 00:08:21.585
- my audio or as far as my podcast

230
00:08:21.585 --> 00:08:23.525
- consumption goes in general.

231
00:08:24.449 --> 00:08:27.110
- I I've really gotten into almost

232
00:08:28.050 --> 00:08:30.850
- making the video essays that I love to

233
00:08:30.850 --> 00:08:33.410
- watch, turning those into podcast because I have

234
00:08:33.410 --> 00:08:35.649
- YouTube premium. So I can just shut my

235
00:08:35.649 --> 00:08:37.029
- phone screen off

236
00:08:37.410 --> 00:08:38.790
- and just listen to them.

237
00:08:39.524 --> 00:08:42.164
- Sure. And, yeah. Like well, with me, I

238
00:08:42.164 --> 00:08:44.324
- don't know. I started way back in the

239
00:08:44.324 --> 00:08:45.444
- day, and that's,

240
00:08:46.164 --> 00:08:46.824
- you know

241
00:08:47.125 --> 00:08:50.084
- you know, before there were phone apps and

242
00:08:50.084 --> 00:08:52.804
- all that, I had the iPod and the

243
00:08:52.804 --> 00:08:53.304
- iPodder

244
00:08:54.889 --> 00:08:57.230
- app and synced it with iTunes,

245
00:08:57.690 --> 00:08:59.710
- which is, no longer a thing.

246
00:09:00.730 --> 00:09:01.230
- Yep.

247
00:09:02.330 --> 00:09:04.190
- And, you know, so I've always

248
00:09:04.809 --> 00:09:05.309
- subscribed

249
00:09:05.850 --> 00:09:06.669
- and downloaded

250
00:09:07.850 --> 00:09:09.470
- things that I listen to,

251
00:09:10.225 --> 00:09:11.044
- But I've

252
00:09:11.424 --> 00:09:13.345
- evolved too, you know. And when you get

253
00:09:13.345 --> 00:09:14.945
- to the phone, you know, for a while,

254
00:09:14.945 --> 00:09:16.325
- I used Apple Podcasts.

255
00:09:17.105 --> 00:09:19.264
- I've tried a whole bunch of them. I

256
00:09:19.264 --> 00:09:21.424
- mean, I probably got eight apps on my

257
00:09:21.424 --> 00:09:24.040
- phone still, you know. And I have certain

258
00:09:24.040 --> 00:09:26.279
- shows I listen to on certain apps just

259
00:09:26.279 --> 00:09:26.779
- because

260
00:09:27.480 --> 00:09:28.379
- they're kinda

261
00:09:29.160 --> 00:09:31.800
- you know, like, podcasting two point o, is

262
00:09:31.800 --> 00:09:34.680
- a show that Adam Curry and Dave Jones

263
00:09:34.680 --> 00:09:35.180
- does.

264
00:09:35.639 --> 00:09:36.940
- And they go live,

265
00:09:37.674 --> 00:09:39.754
- and so I listen to them on an

266
00:09:39.754 --> 00:09:41.934
- app that picks up the live

267
00:09:42.795 --> 00:09:43.934
- so I can listen

268
00:09:44.475 --> 00:09:44.975
- live,

269
00:09:45.514 --> 00:09:47.195
- when they can when they come on on

270
00:09:47.195 --> 00:09:48.174
- Friday afternoons.

271
00:09:49.035 --> 00:09:49.195
- And

272
00:09:50.299 --> 00:09:53.179
- but for my day to day, I'm I

273
00:09:53.179 --> 00:09:56.059
- I just counted it up. I've got 27

274
00:09:56.059 --> 00:09:58.559
- shows that I'm following and or,

275
00:09:59.740 --> 00:10:02.320
- subscribed to on Pocket Casts.

276
00:10:04.274 --> 00:10:06.615
- I like to playlist my shows.

277
00:10:07.714 --> 00:10:10.115
- So, you know, I I subscribe to a

278
00:10:10.115 --> 00:10:10.615
- bunch

279
00:10:11.154 --> 00:10:13.815
- of aviation related shows, a bunch

280
00:10:14.355 --> 00:10:16.934
- of podcast related shows for work,

281
00:10:17.954 --> 00:10:18.694
- some other,

282
00:10:19.389 --> 00:10:21.709
- you know, like daily I have some dailies,

283
00:10:21.709 --> 00:10:23.809
- you know, a couple of new shows that

284
00:10:23.870 --> 00:10:25.490
- that put out daily episodes.

285
00:10:27.309 --> 00:10:28.750
- You know, and then I have just a

286
00:10:28.750 --> 00:10:30.610
- a gee whiz fun playlist.

287
00:10:31.245 --> 00:10:33.325
- So if I feel like listening about airplanes,

288
00:10:33.325 --> 00:10:35.565
- I start that playlist. If I feel like

289
00:10:35.565 --> 00:10:38.065
- listening to podcasts about podcasting,

290
00:10:39.004 --> 00:10:40.304
- I listen to that playlist.

291
00:10:42.125 --> 00:10:44.764
- But, yeah, I've I've pretty much completely switched

292
00:10:44.764 --> 00:10:46.065
- over to Pocket Cast

293
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:47.779
- for my daily driver.

294
00:10:48.559 --> 00:10:50.799
- But I too have been sucked into the

295
00:10:50.799 --> 00:10:51.299
- YouTube

296
00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:52.259
- ecosystem.

297
00:10:53.840 --> 00:10:55.139
- My main television

298
00:10:56.080 --> 00:10:57.059
- is YouTube.

299
00:10:57.440 --> 00:10:57.940
- I

300
00:10:58.399 --> 00:10:59.379
- rarely watch

301
00:11:00.424 --> 00:11:03.144
- any other thing on my big screen TV.

302
00:11:03.144 --> 00:11:05.804
- It's, you know yes. I've I've

303
00:11:06.184 --> 00:11:08.664
- subscribed to Paramount because I'm a Star Trek

304
00:11:08.664 --> 00:11:11.144
- person. You look above me over here, there's

305
00:11:11.144 --> 00:11:12.044
- a an enterprise

306
00:11:12.424 --> 00:11:12.924
- poster.

307
00:11:16.480 --> 00:11:19.120
- And then I'm also, we have Netflix because

308
00:11:19.120 --> 00:11:22.879
- my wife likes Netflix, and, I'm kinda stuck

309
00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:24.500
- on the blacklist here lately

310
00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:25.779
- on Netflix.

311
00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:28.320
- But, for the most part, you know, we

312
00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:30.500
- have an antenna for regular television.

313
00:11:31.654 --> 00:11:34.855
- Everything I watch myself is pretty much YouTube.

314
00:11:34.855 --> 00:11:36.235
- And I too now

315
00:11:36.695 --> 00:11:38.774
- do what you do, Dave, is I'll start

316
00:11:38.774 --> 00:11:39.835
- a YouTube video,

317
00:11:40.695 --> 00:11:43.754
- silence the phone, and listen on my earbuds

318
00:11:43.894 --> 00:11:45.514
- or walking around or

319
00:11:45.990 --> 00:11:47.450
- driving or whatever.

320
00:11:48.629 --> 00:11:49.850
- I went to Dallas

321
00:11:50.549 --> 00:11:52.409
- a while back for a conference.

322
00:11:53.509 --> 00:11:55.049
- And on the way down,

323
00:11:56.309 --> 00:11:58.070
- it was the first time because I always

324
00:11:58.070 --> 00:11:59.669
- used to say, oh, you can't jump on

325
00:11:59.669 --> 00:12:01.884
- a airplane and watch YouTube. Yep. I I

326
00:12:01.884 --> 00:12:04.384
- watch YouTube the whole way, both directions.

327
00:12:05.324 --> 00:12:08.464
- You know? Starlink on the airplane was just

328
00:12:09.324 --> 00:12:11.504
- flawless and worked worked great.

329
00:12:12.125 --> 00:12:15.345
- So can't say that no more. But Yeah.

330
00:12:16.049 --> 00:12:17.750
- Yeah. I think that it shows

331
00:12:19.250 --> 00:12:20.309
- a a big shift.

332
00:12:20.929 --> 00:12:23.570
- You know, a couple years ago, I remember

333
00:12:23.570 --> 00:12:26.529
- when, like, the, you know, video podcasting, quote,

334
00:12:26.529 --> 00:12:27.029
- unquote,

335
00:12:29.105 --> 00:12:31.504
- when that conversation kind of started now video

336
00:12:31.504 --> 00:12:34.545
- podcasting's, like, almost always been a thing. It's

337
00:12:34.545 --> 00:12:36.785
- just now we have the Internet speeds and

338
00:12:36.785 --> 00:12:38.884
- the technology to keep up with it,

339
00:12:39.425 --> 00:12:41.445
- to be able to take your phone

340
00:12:41.820 --> 00:12:43.360
- and, you know, walk outside

341
00:12:43.740 --> 00:12:45.740
- and put it around the yard while having

342
00:12:45.740 --> 00:12:47.679
- a YouTube video play in the background.

343
00:12:50.059 --> 00:12:51.580
- Now you have to pay them to do

344
00:12:51.580 --> 00:12:54.480
- that. That's that's the one disadvantage of YouTube.

345
00:12:55.225 --> 00:12:57.384
- That's that's true unless you wanna, you know,

346
00:12:57.384 --> 00:12:59.945
- fry your phone and just Yeah. Leave your

347
00:12:59.945 --> 00:13:02.345
- screen. On the whole time. Yeah. But then

348
00:13:02.345 --> 00:13:04.424
- you also have to keep touching it, right,

349
00:13:04.424 --> 00:13:06.125
- to make sure it doesn't black out?

350
00:13:06.825 --> 00:13:08.745
- No. You can I mean, the YouTube will

351
00:13:08.745 --> 00:13:11.360
- hold hold it open? Yeah. Yeah. It depends

352
00:13:11.360 --> 00:13:13.919
- on how you set things on your phone.

353
00:13:13.919 --> 00:13:14.419
- But,

354
00:13:14.879 --> 00:13:16.879
- you know, like, I remember just it was

355
00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:19.120
- literally just a couple of years ago where

356
00:13:19.120 --> 00:13:21.379
- that was the conversation is like,

357
00:13:21.919 --> 00:13:25.534
- oh, you like, video podcasting. That's this big

358
00:13:25.534 --> 00:13:27.075
- thing. And I just remember

359
00:13:27.615 --> 00:13:29.454
- going, I don't understand that. I don't know

360
00:13:29.454 --> 00:13:31.154
- why anybody would want to

361
00:13:32.334 --> 00:13:34.334
- make a video podcast because video is a

362
00:13:34.334 --> 00:13:35.954
- lot of work. And then,

363
00:13:36.370 --> 00:13:38.050
- you know, I don't know. I just I'm

364
00:13:38.050 --> 00:13:40.210
- gonna listen to you anyway. And now I'm

365
00:13:40.210 --> 00:13:42.629
- sitting here doing that exact same thing,

366
00:13:43.809 --> 00:13:45.809
- and it just kind of came naturally because

367
00:13:45.809 --> 00:13:48.389
- I watch a lot of YouTube. So, well,

368
00:13:48.929 --> 00:13:50.769
- I got something to do. So phone goes

369
00:13:50.769 --> 00:13:52.495
- in the pocket, and I go and I

370
00:13:52.495 --> 00:13:54.975
- do something else. Sometimes I have earbuds. Sometimes

371
00:13:54.975 --> 00:13:56.355
- it's just playing from my phone.

372
00:13:56.735 --> 00:13:57.235
- Mhmm.

373
00:13:58.095 --> 00:14:00.514
- And I don't know. It's just it's interesting

374
00:14:00.735 --> 00:14:01.235
- to

375
00:14:02.894 --> 00:14:03.375
- see where

376
00:14:04.059 --> 00:14:05.660
- you know, we, as people who are in

377
00:14:05.660 --> 00:14:07.440
- the industry, may resist

378
00:14:08.540 --> 00:14:10.399
- some of these trends and just be like,

379
00:14:10.779 --> 00:14:12.480
- And, you know, video podcasting

380
00:14:13.180 --> 00:14:14.639
- may not ever be

381
00:14:15.100 --> 00:14:16.000
- super popular,

382
00:14:16.684 --> 00:14:18.865
- but it's something that we can't really ignore.

383
00:14:19.084 --> 00:14:19.824
- No. And

384
00:14:20.204 --> 00:14:22.204
- it's kind of nice to feel like, hey,

385
00:14:22.204 --> 00:14:24.784
- you know what? I have embraced this, but

386
00:14:25.164 --> 00:14:26.784
- now I have an opinion

387
00:14:27.164 --> 00:14:29.565
- on it. Whereas a couple years ago, I

388
00:14:29.565 --> 00:14:30.865
- didn't. And I was pretty

389
00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:33.740
- I was pretty

390
00:14:34.360 --> 00:14:37.420
- down on video podcasting. I remember telling people,

391
00:14:37.559 --> 00:14:39.179
- nah, don't do video.

392
00:14:39.639 --> 00:14:42.379
- My my thought has changed on that

393
00:14:42.759 --> 00:14:43.899
- where I just go,

394
00:14:44.934 --> 00:14:47.014
- audio is easier to get into. So that

395
00:14:47.014 --> 00:14:49.095
- will always be the number one thing I

396
00:14:49.095 --> 00:14:51.174
- recommend. If you wanna play around, if you

397
00:14:51.174 --> 00:14:53.834
- want to figure out if making a podcast

398
00:14:54.615 --> 00:14:57.589
- is your thing, start with audio. It's so

399
00:14:57.589 --> 00:15:00.870
- much less overhead. It's a lot less work

400
00:15:00.870 --> 00:15:01.370
- too.

401
00:15:01.909 --> 00:15:04.070
- But if you have the resources and you

402
00:15:04.070 --> 00:15:05.049
- have the time,

403
00:15:05.909 --> 00:15:08.230
- make a video podcast. But just make sure

404
00:15:08.230 --> 00:15:10.730
- that you're doing it well because then

405
00:15:11.045 --> 00:15:13.524
- people will want to watch it. Yeah. But

406
00:15:13.524 --> 00:15:14.884
- they may not watch it. Like, there are

407
00:15:14.884 --> 00:15:17.764
- statistics in the most recent video as of

408
00:15:17.764 --> 00:15:18.585
- this recording

409
00:15:18.965 --> 00:15:19.945
- that I posted

410
00:15:20.245 --> 00:15:21.545
- to our YouTube channel.

411
00:15:22.884 --> 00:15:24.105
- I think it was like

412
00:15:24.649 --> 00:15:26.750
- like, YouTube kind of was leading,

413
00:15:27.850 --> 00:15:28.350
- versus

414
00:15:28.730 --> 00:15:30.110
- Apple and Spotify

415
00:15:30.570 --> 00:15:31.070
- in

416
00:15:31.450 --> 00:15:31.950
- listenership.

417
00:15:32.410 --> 00:15:34.509
- So I thought that was really, really interesting,

418
00:15:34.730 --> 00:15:37.129
- and I'll be I'll be interested to watch

419
00:15:37.129 --> 00:15:39.105
- it as, you know, the next couple of

420
00:15:39.105 --> 00:15:40.084
- years come and go

421
00:15:40.784 --> 00:15:41.924
- as more

422
00:15:42.384 --> 00:15:42.884
- video

423
00:15:43.264 --> 00:15:46.464
- adoption comes because we've got, you know, HLS

424
00:15:46.464 --> 00:15:47.764
- coming with Apple Podcasts.

425
00:15:48.784 --> 00:15:50.144
- Spotify has podcast

426
00:15:50.625 --> 00:15:51.524
- video podcasts,

427
00:15:51.985 --> 00:15:52.485
- and

428
00:15:52.910 --> 00:15:54.830
- rumor has it they're gonna open that up

429
00:15:54.830 --> 00:15:55.730
- at some point.

430
00:15:56.190 --> 00:15:56.690
- So,

431
00:15:58.429 --> 00:16:00.529
- yeah, it's been interesting to watch and

432
00:16:01.070 --> 00:16:03.149
- actually have an opinion on it. Yeah. There

433
00:16:03.149 --> 00:16:03.889
- is still

434
00:16:04.910 --> 00:16:08.110
- something special about audio, and there'll always be

435
00:16:08.110 --> 00:16:08.610
- audio.

436
00:16:08.964 --> 00:16:10.884
- Oh, yeah. And and, you know, I I

437
00:16:10.884 --> 00:16:14.164
- look at the TV industry. Okay. Radio came

438
00:16:14.164 --> 00:16:15.544
- first, then TV,

439
00:16:16.565 --> 00:16:17.705
- but there's still radio.

440
00:16:18.245 --> 00:16:21.065
- And it's still you know, now the radio

441
00:16:21.125 --> 00:16:23.845
- business isn't doing so hot right lately. But

442
00:16:25.259 --> 00:16:27.740
- but there's always gonna be that. And, you

443
00:16:27.740 --> 00:16:28.960
- know, I I argue

444
00:16:29.740 --> 00:16:30.560
- a little bit

445
00:16:31.100 --> 00:16:33.340
- that you should still even if you're doing

446
00:16:33.340 --> 00:16:35.180
- video, you should also put it out as

447
00:16:35.180 --> 00:16:35.680
- audio

448
00:16:36.460 --> 00:16:36.960
- because,

449
00:16:38.425 --> 00:16:39.725
- you know, like, YouTubers,

450
00:16:40.264 --> 00:16:43.065
- you know, our Vidapod product is because is

451
00:16:43.065 --> 00:16:44.605
- pretty popular with YouTubers

452
00:16:45.465 --> 00:16:47.384
- that say, hey. You know, if we're just

453
00:16:47.384 --> 00:16:48.285
- doing a YouTube

454
00:16:48.825 --> 00:16:49.325
- channel,

455
00:16:50.440 --> 00:16:51.579
- I'm just on YouTube.

456
00:16:51.959 --> 00:16:53.339
- It doesn't go anywhere.

457
00:16:54.839 --> 00:16:57.240
- At least with the audio side of it.

458
00:16:57.240 --> 00:16:59.720
- You know, now not all YouTube videos lend

459
00:16:59.720 --> 00:17:00.860
- themselves to

460
00:17:02.039 --> 00:17:02.539
- audio,

461
00:17:03.195 --> 00:17:05.835
- But the ones that do can really, you

462
00:17:05.835 --> 00:17:08.634
- know, gain some audience for both for their

463
00:17:08.634 --> 00:17:10.955
- YouTube channel and just people that aren't gonna

464
00:17:10.955 --> 00:17:11.775
- watch YouTube.

465
00:17:12.474 --> 00:17:14.795
- Yep. You know? And so it's it's an

466
00:17:14.795 --> 00:17:17.214
- advantage to be as everywhere as you can.

467
00:17:18.980 --> 00:17:20.259
- You know? And then I know I I

468
00:17:20.259 --> 00:17:22.899
- don't wanna sound like we're YouTube fanboys and

469
00:17:22.899 --> 00:17:24.019
- girls here. But,

470
00:17:24.659 --> 00:17:27.380
- Oh, I am not. You know? And I

471
00:17:27.380 --> 00:17:29.299
- was just getting ready to to say something.

472
00:17:29.299 --> 00:17:32.440
- Like, I talked to you recently, Mackenzie, about

473
00:17:33.065 --> 00:17:34.984
- some video that I was like, oh, you

474
00:17:34.984 --> 00:17:36.585
- might be interested in watching this, and you're

475
00:17:36.585 --> 00:17:37.325
- just like,

476
00:17:37.704 --> 00:17:39.644
- that is not my thing. I'm sorry.

477
00:17:40.424 --> 00:17:41.484
- And I'm like, okay.

478
00:17:42.825 --> 00:17:46.109
- Which I find fascinating because, like so age

479
00:17:46.109 --> 00:17:47.950
- age wise, like, there is a few years

480
00:17:47.950 --> 00:17:50.829
- difference Yeah. In in in us. We we're

481
00:17:50.829 --> 00:17:51.730
- the same generation,

482
00:17:52.029 --> 00:17:54.450
- but different ends of that generation.

483
00:17:54.750 --> 00:17:58.029
- Yeah. So it's interesting to see how you

484
00:17:58.029 --> 00:17:58.529
- consume

485
00:17:59.095 --> 00:18:01.894
- content versus the way I do. Yeah. I

486
00:18:01.894 --> 00:18:03.495
- mean, the entire time, like, when you were

487
00:18:03.495 --> 00:18:03.995
- saying,

488
00:18:04.535 --> 00:18:05.195
- it is

489
00:18:06.055 --> 00:18:08.795
- easiest for for content creators to

490
00:18:09.495 --> 00:18:11.735
- do audio at this point. Like, if they're

491
00:18:11.735 --> 00:18:13.575
- gonna start a podcast, it's probably the easiest

492
00:18:13.575 --> 00:18:14.795
- to just do audio,

493
00:18:15.950 --> 00:18:18.369
- which is true. But I feel like it

494
00:18:18.910 --> 00:18:21.650
- might be the opposite for consumers.

495
00:18:22.349 --> 00:18:24.349
- The easiest thing to find right now to

496
00:18:24.349 --> 00:18:25.570
- consume is video.

497
00:18:26.109 --> 00:18:28.609
- Oh, good. That's a great observation.

498
00:18:29.224 --> 00:18:30.365
- Like, it really is.

499
00:18:30.825 --> 00:18:32.424
- I hadn't thought about it that way. And

500
00:18:32.424 --> 00:18:35.724
- that's one of the advantages of a video

501
00:18:36.105 --> 00:18:38.285
- is you are in more places.

502
00:18:39.625 --> 00:18:40.125
- You

503
00:18:40.585 --> 00:18:42.744
- can get found I mean, YouTube's one of

504
00:18:42.744 --> 00:18:46.660
- the big biggest search engines out there. And

505
00:18:46.720 --> 00:18:48.099
- you'll be found there

506
00:18:48.720 --> 00:18:51.460
- if people are looking for your particular content

507
00:18:51.599 --> 00:18:53.599
- that you'll be found there where you may

508
00:18:53.599 --> 00:18:56.160
- not be found on Apple Podcasts. You might

509
00:18:56.160 --> 00:18:57.539
- not be found on Spotify.

510
00:18:58.565 --> 00:19:00.644
- So, you know, I'm always I've always been

511
00:19:00.644 --> 00:19:03.384
- an advocate of being as everywhere as possible.

512
00:19:03.605 --> 00:19:06.164
- Now you can put just plain audio on

513
00:19:06.164 --> 00:19:08.585
- YouTube. We have that integration here at Blueberry.

514
00:19:11.279 --> 00:19:13.279
- I don't find that compelling. It's you know,

515
00:19:13.279 --> 00:19:15.600
- I'm gonna be staring at if I'm looking

516
00:19:15.600 --> 00:19:17.440
- at the screen, I'm gonna be staring at

517
00:19:17.440 --> 00:19:18.660
- your podcast logo

518
00:19:19.680 --> 00:19:20.980
- and hearing the audio.

519
00:19:21.600 --> 00:19:24.880
- Yeah. From from a video marketing standpoint too,

520
00:19:24.880 --> 00:19:26.474
- this is something I've

521
00:19:26.954 --> 00:19:30.075
- I've again, watching YouTube. I learned Yeah. That,

522
00:19:30.075 --> 00:19:31.855
- like, the way that people watch

523
00:19:32.154 --> 00:19:34.494
- YouTube is they look at the thumbnail.

524
00:19:34.954 --> 00:19:36.394
- They look at the title. They look at

525
00:19:36.394 --> 00:19:38.654
- the thumbnail again. And if

526
00:19:39.259 --> 00:19:42.220
- if that if the thumbnail is interesting enough

527
00:19:42.220 --> 00:19:45.019
- and matches the title well enough, people will

528
00:19:45.019 --> 00:19:47.440
- watch your video. Mhmm. And so

529
00:19:47.820 --> 00:19:50.220
- it's it's interesting because, like, that's a big

530
00:19:50.220 --> 00:19:52.720
- reason that I've always been,

531
00:19:53.315 --> 00:19:55.474
- like, do I really wanna put my audio

532
00:19:55.474 --> 00:19:56.855
- podcast on YouTube?

533
00:19:58.434 --> 00:20:00.275
- Even though I know people are just listening,

534
00:20:00.275 --> 00:20:02.115
- they're not looking at it. It's always been

535
00:20:02.115 --> 00:20:03.315
- one of those things in the back of

536
00:20:03.315 --> 00:20:04.835
- my head. I don't want them to just

537
00:20:04.835 --> 00:20:07.019
- look at my cover art, but I also

538
00:20:07.079 --> 00:20:08.759
- don't wanna have to develop some kind of

539
00:20:08.759 --> 00:20:10.519
- video. I don't wanna have to make AI

540
00:20:10.519 --> 00:20:11.740
- video for

541
00:20:12.200 --> 00:20:14.700
- my audio podcast. It just doesn't make sense.

542
00:20:15.160 --> 00:20:15.660
- So,

543
00:20:16.680 --> 00:20:17.640
- yeah. It's

544
00:20:18.039 --> 00:20:19.960
- Interesting. Okay. So you guys are, yeah, you

545
00:20:19.960 --> 00:20:22.424
- guys are definitely YouTube people. I have never

546
00:20:22.424 --> 00:20:24.345
- been and never will be a YouTube person.

547
00:20:24.345 --> 00:20:26.184
- If there is content that is long enough,

548
00:20:26.184 --> 00:20:28.184
- I'm watching it on my TV from a

549
00:20:28.184 --> 00:20:29.244
- production company.

550
00:20:30.265 --> 00:20:30.765
- If

551
00:20:31.865 --> 00:20:32.444
- you know?

552
00:20:34.519 --> 00:20:36.839
- I am, however, a TikTok person because they

553
00:20:37.000 --> 00:20:39.319
- those are short. Mhmm. And I can go

554
00:20:39.319 --> 00:20:39.819
- through

555
00:20:40.759 --> 00:20:44.059
- 10 different topics in fifteen minutes. And, unfortunately,

556
00:20:44.359 --> 00:20:46.679
- that is how my brain works. And that

557
00:20:46.679 --> 00:20:49.000
- fifteen minutes will really be three hours of

558
00:20:49.240 --> 00:20:50.404
- Yeah. Exactly.

559
00:20:51.424 --> 00:20:54.225
- So so I'm never gonna watch your podcast

560
00:20:54.225 --> 00:20:56.225
- on YouTube. That's never gonna happen for me.

561
00:20:56.225 --> 00:20:57.265
- However Mhmm.

562
00:20:57.744 --> 00:20:59.765
- I will see the clips

563
00:21:00.945 --> 00:21:04.325
- or someone mention your podcast Mhmm. On TikTok.

564
00:21:04.890 --> 00:21:06.650
- Yep. And then I will go listen to

565
00:21:06.650 --> 00:21:09.130
- it on on Apple Podcasts. Mhmm. I will

566
00:21:09.130 --> 00:21:12.009
- do that. That is in my, like, in

567
00:21:12.009 --> 00:21:12.509
- my

568
00:21:12.970 --> 00:21:15.289
- way that I consume podcasts. That's how I

569
00:21:15.289 --> 00:21:16.830
- find the show sometimes.

570
00:21:17.210 --> 00:21:19.230
- Right. And if you if you're Discovery.

571
00:21:19.894 --> 00:21:21.894
- Yeah. If it's the discovery for me, like,

572
00:21:21.894 --> 00:21:23.335
- that's how I'm gonna find it.

573
00:21:23.734 --> 00:21:25.575
- I'm never gonna watch it. I'm gonna listen

574
00:21:25.575 --> 00:21:27.815
- to it, but I'm gonna find it probably

575
00:21:27.815 --> 00:21:29.994
- through video at this point. At least,

576
00:21:30.454 --> 00:21:32.855
- you know, partially, whether someone mentions it in

577
00:21:32.855 --> 00:21:33.754
- a comment, whether

578
00:21:34.180 --> 00:21:36.099
- it is a clip from the actual show,

579
00:21:36.099 --> 00:21:38.039
- whether it is the show's actual,

580
00:21:38.660 --> 00:21:39.400
- you know,

581
00:21:39.779 --> 00:21:41.700
- official account or if it is a fan

582
00:21:41.700 --> 00:21:44.019
- account or what or if it is just,

583
00:21:44.019 --> 00:21:44.839
- like, offhand.

584
00:21:45.619 --> 00:21:47.140
- That's a big way that I'm probably gonna

585
00:21:47.140 --> 00:21:47.880
- find it nowadays.

586
00:21:48.355 --> 00:21:49.654
- Right. Yeah. You know,

587
00:21:50.355 --> 00:21:52.595
- YouTube videos, I I do watch it on

588
00:21:52.595 --> 00:21:55.154
- my big screen TV 99%

589
00:21:55.154 --> 00:21:57.394
- of the time. I I'm not of the

590
00:21:57.394 --> 00:21:59.815
- demographic where I'm gonna hold my phone up

591
00:22:00.274 --> 00:22:00.774
- and

592
00:22:01.315 --> 00:22:03.799
- watch a long form video on my phone.

593
00:22:03.799 --> 00:22:06.119
- I watch lots of shorts, and I don't

594
00:22:06.119 --> 00:22:08.860
- do TikTok in particular, but I do shorts

595
00:22:09.320 --> 00:22:12.380
- on YouTube, which are similar things and

596
00:22:13.000 --> 00:22:14.380
- and all that. I I

597
00:22:14.695 --> 00:22:17.335
- never really got into TikTok. I I loaded

598
00:22:17.335 --> 00:22:18.555
- it once, and then

599
00:22:19.335 --> 00:22:21.335
- three hours later said, no. I can't do

600
00:22:21.335 --> 00:22:22.474
- this. Mhmm.

601
00:22:23.335 --> 00:22:23.994
- You know?

602
00:22:24.375 --> 00:22:26.855
- Three hours. I'm I'm, like, six hours later

603
00:22:26.855 --> 00:22:28.480
- going, oh, I should probably go to sleep

604
00:22:28.480 --> 00:22:29.519
- before I have to wake up in an

605
00:22:29.519 --> 00:22:30.419
- hour. Yeah.

606
00:22:30.799 --> 00:22:33.519
- Yeah. And and, you know, those even the,

607
00:22:33.519 --> 00:22:36.359
- you know, YouTube shorts, same idea, you know,

608
00:22:36.359 --> 00:22:38.640
- the Mhmm. You can really get sucked into

609
00:22:38.640 --> 00:22:39.140
- it.

610
00:22:39.519 --> 00:22:40.019
- And

611
00:22:40.365 --> 00:22:42.125
- I guess that's the goal, but, you know,

612
00:22:42.125 --> 00:22:44.285
- you do learn stuff. And then, you know,

613
00:22:44.285 --> 00:22:46.045
- like a lot of the shorts people that

614
00:22:46.045 --> 00:22:46.545
- I've

615
00:22:47.085 --> 00:22:50.144
- discovered because of watching short form video,

616
00:22:51.164 --> 00:22:52.384
- I discover them.

617
00:22:52.890 --> 00:22:55.130
- I look at their YouTube channel, and if

618
00:22:55.130 --> 00:22:58.009
- they also have an audio podcast, I'll find

619
00:22:58.009 --> 00:22:59.470
- them that way. I mean, there's,

620
00:22:59.849 --> 00:23:02.490
- you know, the the whole media I mean,

621
00:23:02.490 --> 00:23:04.330
- podcasting is, you know, you get down to

622
00:23:04.330 --> 00:23:07.529
- it. Podcasting is a distribution method, not a

623
00:23:07.529 --> 00:23:08.029
- format.

624
00:23:09.474 --> 00:23:11.095
- Sure. You know? And,

625
00:23:11.634 --> 00:23:13.394
- you know, you wanna be real stickler. It's

626
00:23:13.394 --> 00:23:16.134
- RSS, but that's, you know, the ship sailed,

627
00:23:16.994 --> 00:23:17.894
- a little bit.

628
00:23:18.355 --> 00:23:20.115
- Yeah. We don't get to decide that. The

629
00:23:20.115 --> 00:23:21.839
- the consumer is At the core, at the

630
00:23:21.839 --> 00:23:24.640
- core, it is just a distribution method. And

631
00:23:24.640 --> 00:23:25.779
- if you could distribute

632
00:23:26.160 --> 00:23:29.119
- yours is that a word? Distribute? Distribute? There

633
00:23:29.119 --> 00:23:31.279
- you go. Yeah. Infast is on the wrong

634
00:23:31.279 --> 00:23:32.880
- syllable, but you got it. Yeah. There we

635
00:23:32.880 --> 00:23:35.115
- go. But, you know, as long as you

636
00:23:35.115 --> 00:23:37.035
- can be as everywhere as you can, who

637
00:23:37.035 --> 00:23:39.515
- cares what they call it? You know? Yep.

638
00:23:39.515 --> 00:23:43.195
- The consumer of the media doesn't care whether

639
00:23:43.195 --> 00:23:45.595
- it's called a podcast, a YouTube channel, a

640
00:23:45.595 --> 00:23:48.849
- TV show, a radio show. Doesn't matter. It's

641
00:23:48.849 --> 00:23:49.589
- the distribution.

642
00:23:51.089 --> 00:23:52.230
- And being as,

643
00:23:52.609 --> 00:23:53.750
- you know, as

644
00:23:54.210 --> 00:23:56.710
- agile as far as putting your stuff everywhere

645
00:23:56.769 --> 00:23:58.230
- you can be reasonably

646
00:23:58.929 --> 00:23:59.990
- is a good thing.

647
00:24:00.690 --> 00:24:01.349
- You know,

648
00:24:02.184 --> 00:24:04.224
- And I you know? I

649
00:24:05.205 --> 00:24:07.085
- personally, I'm not gonna watch

650
00:24:07.625 --> 00:24:09.705
- a a video on my phone unless it's

651
00:24:09.705 --> 00:24:12.765
- a short one. But on my big TV,

652
00:24:13.224 --> 00:24:15.144
- no problem. You know? Got an hour long

653
00:24:15.144 --> 00:24:17.404
- show. As long as it's interesting and compelling,

654
00:24:17.545 --> 00:24:18.900
- I'll sit and watch it.

655
00:24:19.359 --> 00:24:20.880
- Yep. I watch this,

656
00:24:21.440 --> 00:24:23.599
- this one YouTube channel. He doesn't well, he

657
00:24:23.599 --> 00:24:26.259
- does a podcast, but not of this show.

658
00:24:27.279 --> 00:24:29.680
- But his he does a a weekly video

659
00:24:29.680 --> 00:24:30.960
- that can be up to two and a

660
00:24:30.960 --> 00:24:32.339
- half, three hours sometimes.

661
00:24:33.404 --> 00:24:35.965
- And I make sure I I watch that,

662
00:24:36.445 --> 00:24:38.545
- you know, usually sometime over the weekend.

663
00:24:40.045 --> 00:24:41.984
- It comes out on Friday. And

664
00:24:42.765 --> 00:24:45.585
- but that's not everybody's use case. You know?

665
00:24:46.650 --> 00:24:48.330
- And, then, of course, they listen to one

666
00:24:48.330 --> 00:24:50.650
- audio podcast that can be up to three

667
00:24:50.650 --> 00:24:51.869
- hours twice a week.

668
00:24:54.089 --> 00:24:56.349
- Yeah. I I did wanna touch on,

669
00:24:58.410 --> 00:24:59.630
- Mackenzie's, like,

670
00:25:00.089 --> 00:25:02.269
- you know, finding podcasts on,

671
00:25:03.194 --> 00:25:03.694
- TikTok.

672
00:25:04.075 --> 00:25:04.474
- Yeah.

673
00:25:05.515 --> 00:25:07.914
- So something we we've started to do to

674
00:25:07.914 --> 00:25:10.734
- kinda pull pull back our blueberry curtain here

675
00:25:10.875 --> 00:25:11.375
- is,

676
00:25:12.234 --> 00:25:14.490
- we do what's called social listening. Basically, it's

677
00:25:15.049 --> 00:25:16.269
- getting out into

678
00:25:16.890 --> 00:25:19.309
- the the conversations that are happening online

679
00:25:19.769 --> 00:25:22.029
- and going, what are you guys talking about

680
00:25:22.250 --> 00:25:23.069
- as podcasters?

681
00:25:23.690 --> 00:25:24.589
- Mhmm. And,

682
00:25:25.849 --> 00:25:27.849
- one thing that I see over and over

683
00:25:27.849 --> 00:25:28.829
- and over again

684
00:25:29.369 --> 00:25:29.869
- is

685
00:25:30.345 --> 00:25:31.164
- people becoming

686
00:25:31.785 --> 00:25:32.684
- very obsessed

687
00:25:34.184 --> 00:25:36.105
- with making clips of their show. And, like,

688
00:25:36.105 --> 00:25:38.424
- I've seen people just, like, bend over backward

689
00:25:38.424 --> 00:25:40.525
- to figure out how to make it work.

690
00:25:40.585 --> 00:25:42.265
- So if I could give just a little

691
00:25:42.265 --> 00:25:43.644
- piece of practical advice,

692
00:25:44.424 --> 00:25:45.484
- what I would do,

693
00:25:46.319 --> 00:25:49.039
- rather than having a full blown, oh, I

694
00:25:49.039 --> 00:25:51.359
- need a soft box and this type of

695
00:25:51.359 --> 00:25:53.599
- light and this super fancy camera, and I

696
00:25:53.599 --> 00:25:56.259
- have to spend six hours setting things up,

697
00:25:57.359 --> 00:25:58.259
- grab a webcam,

698
00:25:59.005 --> 00:26:01.644
- place it somewhere wherever you record, or if

699
00:26:01.644 --> 00:26:04.125
- you record on Zoom, just record the Zoom

700
00:26:04.125 --> 00:26:05.105
- call in the video,

701
00:26:05.804 --> 00:26:08.525
- and use that to clip it. There are

702
00:26:08.525 --> 00:26:09.424
- plenty of

703
00:26:09.724 --> 00:26:11.724
- services out there that you can take your

704
00:26:11.724 --> 00:26:13.265
- video when it's done,

705
00:26:13.609 --> 00:26:16.029
- And Yep. It will find clips for you

706
00:26:16.170 --> 00:26:18.250
- and tell you, like, hey. These are pretty

707
00:26:18.250 --> 00:26:20.570
- good clips based on the transcript and things

708
00:26:20.570 --> 00:26:22.970
- like that. Just do that and make it

709
00:26:22.970 --> 00:26:24.190
- as simple as possible

710
00:26:24.570 --> 00:26:26.830
- so that you are not killing yourself

711
00:26:27.210 --> 00:26:27.710
- to

712
00:26:29.904 --> 00:26:31.845
- get all of that content out there. Because

713
00:26:32.865 --> 00:26:34.164
- even even doing

714
00:26:35.105 --> 00:26:37.984
- the simplest podcast can easily become a full

715
00:26:37.984 --> 00:26:40.625
- time job. And this comes from from a

716
00:26:40.625 --> 00:26:42.384
- guy who's done a bunch of different kinds

717
00:26:42.384 --> 00:26:44.964
- of podcasts. And, like, now I'm even going,

718
00:26:45.130 --> 00:26:46.890
- okay. Well, I'm gonna start a new audio

719
00:26:46.890 --> 00:26:47.789
- drama podcast,

720
00:26:48.409 --> 00:26:50.089
- even though I don't actually have time to

721
00:26:50.089 --> 00:26:52.730
- do it. Yeah. But I wanna do it.

722
00:26:52.730 --> 00:26:55.049
- It sounds like a lot of fun and

723
00:26:55.049 --> 00:26:57.710
- a lot of work. I'm guilty as charged.

724
00:26:57.849 --> 00:27:00.384
- I've started and stopped more podcasts than anybody

725
00:27:00.384 --> 00:27:01.045
- I know,

726
00:27:02.384 --> 00:27:03.605
- because it is work.

727
00:27:05.265 --> 00:27:07.265
- You know, I'm I'm I was doing a

728
00:27:07.265 --> 00:27:09.424
- daily here recently, and I sort of been

729
00:27:09.424 --> 00:27:11.365
- on hiatus with that one as well.

730
00:27:12.070 --> 00:27:13.990
- And that one was super easy. It took

731
00:27:13.990 --> 00:27:16.230
- me, you know, a five minute show took

732
00:27:16.230 --> 00:27:18.710
- me ten minutes to produce, and that was

733
00:27:18.710 --> 00:27:19.210
- it.

734
00:27:19.990 --> 00:27:22.710
- But another, thing, you know, along your lines

735
00:27:22.710 --> 00:27:24.630
- as far as clipping the show, instead of

736
00:27:24.630 --> 00:27:27.450
- clipping it, you could also promo it by

737
00:27:27.575 --> 00:27:28.714
- picking up your phone

738
00:27:29.654 --> 00:27:32.214
- and doing a selfie video. Hey. I've got

739
00:27:32.214 --> 00:27:33.815
- this week on blah blah blah blah blah,

740
00:27:33.815 --> 00:27:35.335
- you know, and then throw that up on

741
00:27:35.335 --> 00:27:38.875
- you on TikTok and YouTube and wherever else

742
00:27:38.934 --> 00:27:41.900
- short form videos go. I mean, how easy

743
00:27:41.900 --> 00:27:42.559
- is that?

744
00:27:43.180 --> 00:27:44.940
- You know, it doesn't have to actually be

745
00:27:44.940 --> 00:27:46.480
- a clip of your show.

746
00:27:46.859 --> 00:27:48.400
- No. It could be a clip

747
00:27:48.779 --> 00:27:50.000
- about your show.

748
00:27:50.299 --> 00:27:52.400
- Yeah. That is good enough for me.

749
00:27:53.464 --> 00:27:55.464
- That's that's generally good enough for me in

750
00:27:55.464 --> 00:27:58.365
- terms of, like, the promotion. But Mhmm. Also,

751
00:27:58.904 --> 00:28:00.365
- in terms of, like,

752
00:28:01.065 --> 00:28:01.565
- listening,

753
00:28:03.065 --> 00:28:04.845
- I've seen this happen in

754
00:28:06.200 --> 00:28:08.759
- the the TV shows that I'm watching Mhmm.

755
00:28:08.920 --> 00:28:09.580
- But also

756
00:28:09.960 --> 00:28:12.039
- in the podcast that I'm listening to. A

757
00:28:12.039 --> 00:28:13.980
- lot of limited series because

758
00:28:16.200 --> 00:28:17.580
- production has gotten

759
00:28:18.045 --> 00:28:20.525
- so long in between season one and season

760
00:28:20.525 --> 00:28:22.845
- two that I am done with it. I

761
00:28:22.845 --> 00:28:24.924
- am done with a show that only had

762
00:28:24.924 --> 00:28:26.605
- eight episodes, and then you want me to

763
00:28:26.605 --> 00:28:28.765
- come back three years later. I'm gonna do

764
00:28:28.765 --> 00:28:31.404
- it for some really damn good shows. But

765
00:28:31.404 --> 00:28:32.065
- in general,

766
00:28:32.899 --> 00:28:34.839
- like, I'm not gonna care.

767
00:28:35.140 --> 00:28:37.700
- I'm just I'm not coming back. And so

768
00:28:37.700 --> 00:28:38.519
- I really

769
00:28:39.779 --> 00:28:42.819
- have have seen myself change over to I

770
00:28:42.819 --> 00:28:43.880
- wanna get in,

771
00:28:44.419 --> 00:28:45.640
- and I care about

772
00:28:47.244 --> 00:28:50.125
- this six episode show that really knocks it

773
00:28:50.125 --> 00:28:51.744
- out of the park. Mhmm.

774
00:28:53.244 --> 00:28:54.144
- Instead of,

775
00:28:55.085 --> 00:28:56.144
- you know, every

776
00:28:56.605 --> 00:28:59.184
- every day, every three days, every whatever

777
00:28:59.730 --> 00:29:02.210
- of a mediocre episode that just feels like

778
00:29:02.210 --> 00:29:03.670
- I'm I'm eavesdropping

779
00:29:04.049 --> 00:29:05.569
- on a conversation I don't care about at

780
00:29:05.569 --> 00:29:06.470
- a coffee shop.

781
00:29:06.849 --> 00:29:09.829
- Yeah. Yeah. I I want to be enthralled.

782
00:29:10.529 --> 00:29:11.809
- That's what I care about at this point

783
00:29:11.809 --> 00:29:14.289
- for my content. Try try being a Star

784
00:29:14.289 --> 00:29:15.190
- Trek fan.

785
00:29:16.825 --> 00:29:17.565
- The dedication?

786
00:29:18.025 --> 00:29:19.565
- They do 10 episodes,

787
00:29:20.184 --> 00:29:23.065
- and then three years later, do 10 more

788
00:29:23.065 --> 00:29:25.224
- episodes. And then three years later, do you

789
00:29:25.224 --> 00:29:25.964
- know, it's

790
00:29:26.585 --> 00:29:28.679
- yeah. You know? Yeah. You know? Then they

791
00:29:28.679 --> 00:29:30.440
- have a a spin off series that's a

792
00:29:30.440 --> 00:29:33.000
- totally different name that connects to four seasons

793
00:29:33.000 --> 00:29:35.000
- ago. Yeah. Oh my god. My friends were

794
00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:37.160
- asking recently. They're like, are you watching House

795
00:29:37.160 --> 00:29:39.400
- of the Dragon? No. Are you gonna watch

796
00:29:39.400 --> 00:29:42.125
- the new Harry Potter TV series? No. No.

797
00:29:42.345 --> 00:29:43.865
- I watched all the movies. I read the

798
00:29:43.865 --> 00:29:44.365
- books.

799
00:29:44.825 --> 00:29:45.565
- I'm good.

800
00:29:46.184 --> 00:29:48.105
- Like, I'm good for Harry Potter. I don't

801
00:29:48.105 --> 00:29:49.865
- care about Game of Thrones. Also, they trashed

802
00:29:49.865 --> 00:29:51.705
- the last season. So, no, you ruined it.

803
00:29:51.705 --> 00:29:53.085
- I don't wanna come back.

804
00:29:54.289 --> 00:29:57.009
- Yeah. See, the trick there is, like, my

805
00:29:57.009 --> 00:29:58.789
- wife and I do, we pick a series

806
00:29:58.929 --> 00:30:00.230
- that is done.

807
00:30:01.409 --> 00:30:02.929
- And then you go watch it after. And

808
00:30:02.929 --> 00:30:05.409
- then we binge watch that series till we're

809
00:30:05.409 --> 00:30:05.909
- done.

810
00:30:06.450 --> 00:30:08.849
- And then we pick another one and binge

811
00:30:08.849 --> 00:30:11.144
- watch that series till it's done. You know,

812
00:30:11.144 --> 00:30:14.585
- like, Blacklist has, what, eleven seasons or something.

813
00:30:14.585 --> 00:30:16.904
- We're, like, on season eight. We've been watching

814
00:30:16.904 --> 00:30:18.044
- it for six months.

815
00:30:18.825 --> 00:30:19.325
- Yep.

816
00:30:20.184 --> 00:30:23.140
- Exactly. I I so much of my content

817
00:30:23.140 --> 00:30:26.359
- consumption well, I it's kinda interesting because

818
00:30:26.900 --> 00:30:28.359
- I feel like I

819
00:30:28.819 --> 00:30:31.000
- I just adore long form

820
00:30:31.619 --> 00:30:32.119
- Mhmm.

821
00:30:32.500 --> 00:30:33.000
- Anything.

822
00:30:33.539 --> 00:30:34.440
- You give me

823
00:30:34.954 --> 00:30:37.214
- an hour long audio podcast

824
00:30:37.835 --> 00:30:39.375
- Mhmm. Or, you know,

825
00:30:39.914 --> 00:30:41.055
- a a a video essay.

826
00:30:41.515 --> 00:30:43.595
- I am here for it. But at the

827
00:30:43.595 --> 00:30:44.414
- same time,

828
00:30:45.355 --> 00:30:47.115
- I will be more than happy to just

829
00:30:47.115 --> 00:30:48.575
- sit and scroll Instagram

830
00:30:48.990 --> 00:30:50.910
- on my phone for the same amount of

831
00:30:50.910 --> 00:30:52.670
- time Mhmm. And then have a dog bark

832
00:30:52.670 --> 00:30:54.269
- and be like, hey. I gotta go outside.

833
00:30:54.269 --> 00:30:56.589
- I'm like, okay. But the phone's coming with

834
00:30:56.589 --> 00:30:59.069
- me because I'm not done scrolling. Yeah.

835
00:30:59.950 --> 00:31:01.410
- So it's just kinda interesting,

836
00:31:01.744 --> 00:31:04.545
- like, how how much I do adore long

837
00:31:04.545 --> 00:31:05.045
- form

838
00:31:05.585 --> 00:31:06.965
- even in Mhmm.

839
00:31:07.744 --> 00:31:08.884
- A time when

840
00:31:09.265 --> 00:31:12.625
- short form is still super popular. Everybody's trying

841
00:31:12.625 --> 00:31:13.684
- to grab your attention,

842
00:31:14.065 --> 00:31:16.244
- but I I still love that long form.

843
00:31:16.690 --> 00:31:17.190
- Yeah.

844
00:31:17.890 --> 00:31:20.369
- And that's, you know, that's that's just to

845
00:31:20.369 --> 00:31:23.490
- make make the content you want and consume

846
00:31:23.490 --> 00:31:24.150
- the content

847
00:31:24.849 --> 00:31:25.509
- you want

848
00:31:25.809 --> 00:31:27.650
- the way you want. And that that's something

849
00:31:27.650 --> 00:31:29.830
- that, you know, we we're spoiled now.

850
00:31:30.705 --> 00:31:32.005
- You know, used to be

851
00:31:32.625 --> 00:31:36.625
- watching TV involved, oh, Sunday night at 08:00,

852
00:31:36.625 --> 00:31:38.144
- I have to be sitting in front of

853
00:31:38.144 --> 00:31:40.404
- this box in the in the living room.

854
00:31:41.025 --> 00:31:43.359
- And that was it. I mean, there was

855
00:31:43.359 --> 00:31:44.339
- no option

856
00:31:44.640 --> 00:31:45.700
- to go online.

857
00:31:46.240 --> 00:31:48.319
- There was no option to even record it

858
00:31:48.319 --> 00:31:49.460
- when I was a kid.

859
00:31:50.079 --> 00:31:52.880
- VPRs weren't even invented when I started watching

860
00:31:52.880 --> 00:31:55.039
- TV. You know? Right. It's me old. I

861
00:31:55.039 --> 00:31:55.700
- get it.

862
00:31:56.495 --> 00:31:59.775
- But, you know, and, oh, color? That's actually

863
00:31:59.775 --> 00:32:01.394
- in color now? Cool.

864
00:32:02.654 --> 00:32:03.394
- That's funny.

865
00:32:03.775 --> 00:32:04.174
- But,

866
00:32:04.894 --> 00:32:07.295
- you know, hey, that's, you know, my my

867
00:32:07.295 --> 00:32:09.795
- generation kind of bridged the gap between,

868
00:32:10.539 --> 00:32:13.359
- you know, no technology and all the technology.

869
00:32:14.299 --> 00:32:14.799
- Right.

870
00:32:15.180 --> 00:32:17.440
- Yeah. You know, we've had to adapt.

871
00:32:17.900 --> 00:32:20.400
- But, yeah, we're spoiled, you know. And and

872
00:32:20.700 --> 00:32:22.240
- here's here's where I

873
00:32:23.099 --> 00:32:24.319
- I find it funny

874
00:32:25.035 --> 00:32:26.955
- is I'm sitting there watching a TV show.

875
00:32:26.955 --> 00:32:27.855
- So we're watching

876
00:32:28.394 --> 00:32:29.695
- Star Trek or Blacklist

877
00:32:30.075 --> 00:32:32.494
- or some long form TV show,

878
00:32:32.795 --> 00:32:34.475
- and it gets to a boring part. I

879
00:32:34.475 --> 00:32:36.394
- pull out my phone and I'm looking through

880
00:32:36.394 --> 00:32:37.295
- shorts and

881
00:32:37.755 --> 00:32:39.855
- scrolling Facebook or whatever.

882
00:32:41.809 --> 00:32:44.049
- Really? You're so bored with watching TV that

883
00:32:44.049 --> 00:32:45.590
- you need to watch another one?

884
00:32:46.769 --> 00:32:47.910
- Yeah. Well,

885
00:32:48.369 --> 00:32:51.910
- I mean, this isn't necessarily podcasting related, but,

886
00:32:52.210 --> 00:32:52.710
- like,

887
00:32:53.085 --> 00:32:56.384
- Netflix has started to tell writers and directors,

888
00:32:56.684 --> 00:32:58.044
- you need to change the way that you

889
00:32:58.044 --> 00:33:00.625
- shoot your long form content because

890
00:33:01.244 --> 00:33:02.845
- you have to you have to make it

891
00:33:02.845 --> 00:33:04.924
- as a second screen. That's what they're referring

892
00:33:04.924 --> 00:33:05.825
- to it as,

893
00:33:06.284 --> 00:33:08.069
- because people are checking their phones.

894
00:33:08.630 --> 00:33:09.029
- So,

895
00:33:09.669 --> 00:33:12.069
- and along those season of stranger things for

896
00:33:12.069 --> 00:33:13.049
- that exact reason.

897
00:33:13.429 --> 00:33:16.149
- Oh, don't even that's a that's a different

898
00:33:16.149 --> 00:33:16.649
- conversation,

899
00:33:17.109 --> 00:33:19.429
- and I could be here for years. Yeah.

900
00:33:19.429 --> 00:33:20.149
- It's the,

901
00:33:21.065 --> 00:33:23.384
- you are on your medium sized screen all

902
00:33:23.384 --> 00:33:25.625
- day long, and then you you're done with

903
00:33:25.625 --> 00:33:27.224
- that. So then you sit in front of

904
00:33:27.224 --> 00:33:29.224
- your big screen to scroll on your tiny

905
00:33:29.224 --> 00:33:29.724
- screen.

906
00:33:30.025 --> 00:33:31.804
- That's what happens to everyone nowadays.

907
00:33:32.345 --> 00:33:32.845
- Yeah.

908
00:33:33.144 --> 00:33:35.170
- And, you know, as much as I hate

909
00:33:35.170 --> 00:33:36.850
- to admit it, I'm sucked right into the

910
00:33:36.850 --> 00:33:37.670
- same thing.

911
00:33:38.049 --> 00:33:40.450
- You know? I need to be entertained all

912
00:33:40.450 --> 00:33:42.690
- that. Yes. I do. Like, you know, standing

913
00:33:42.690 --> 00:33:44.769
- in line at the grocery store, and I

914
00:33:44.769 --> 00:33:46.549
- might pull out my phone. Just

915
00:33:46.930 --> 00:33:48.630
- well, I'm just standing here.

916
00:33:49.105 --> 00:33:50.644
- You know? Yeah. And

917
00:33:51.024 --> 00:33:53.984
- and and it is relevant to podcasters because

918
00:33:53.984 --> 00:33:54.724
- we are

919
00:33:55.345 --> 00:33:56.644
- competing with

920
00:33:57.345 --> 00:33:58.164
- all of this.

921
00:33:59.105 --> 00:34:00.865
- And not not in a bad way, but

922
00:34:00.865 --> 00:34:01.264
- we are

923
00:34:02.240 --> 00:34:04.880
- we're part of the media landscape as a

924
00:34:04.880 --> 00:34:08.000
- podcaster, whether you're doing an audio only show,

925
00:34:08.000 --> 00:34:10.260
- a video show, a YouTube channel,

926
00:34:10.880 --> 00:34:14.000
- whatever, all the above, we're competing with all

927
00:34:14.000 --> 00:34:16.340
- of that stuff, TV included.

928
00:34:17.484 --> 00:34:20.045
- Yeah. And I I I think something like,

929
00:34:20.045 --> 00:34:21.644
- a a key thing that I think every

930
00:34:21.644 --> 00:34:23.824
- podcaster needs to consider if they're not

931
00:34:24.364 --> 00:34:24.864
- is

932
00:34:25.324 --> 00:34:27.184
- what does your audience

933
00:34:27.565 --> 00:34:28.065
- want?

934
00:34:28.364 --> 00:34:30.125
- I think when you have a new show,

935
00:34:30.125 --> 00:34:32.784
- you don't know, so play around with it.

936
00:34:33.359 --> 00:34:35.039
- We've talked about it in older episodes of

937
00:34:35.039 --> 00:34:37.859
- Podcast Insider to just experiment with your show

938
00:34:37.920 --> 00:34:40.319
- because nobody's going to scream at you because

939
00:34:40.319 --> 00:34:41.539
- you changed something.

940
00:34:41.839 --> 00:34:43.679
- They will tell you, hey. I enjoyed that

941
00:34:43.679 --> 00:34:45.279
- or I didn't enjoy that thing that you

942
00:34:45.279 --> 00:34:46.099
- got rid of.

943
00:34:47.039 --> 00:34:47.539
- But,

944
00:34:48.275 --> 00:34:49.735
- again, if you're a new show,

945
00:34:50.035 --> 00:34:52.195
- play around with video. It doesn't have to

946
00:34:52.195 --> 00:34:54.434
- be the thing that you do, but make

947
00:34:54.434 --> 00:34:56.835
- a video component to your audio show. Play

948
00:34:56.835 --> 00:34:58.614
- around with it. See how well it's received,

949
00:34:58.994 --> 00:35:01.380
- and then lean into that a little bit

950
00:35:01.460 --> 00:35:03.460
- more. Or don't do it if you realize

951
00:35:03.460 --> 00:35:04.599
- I got two views

952
00:35:05.059 --> 00:35:07.719
- versus I got, you know, 50 downloads

953
00:35:08.179 --> 00:35:10.579
- on my or listens on my on my

954
00:35:10.579 --> 00:35:11.559
- audio podcast.

955
00:35:13.139 --> 00:35:13.639
- Because,

956
00:35:14.815 --> 00:35:15.474
- you know,

957
00:35:15.775 --> 00:35:16.755
- while you are

958
00:35:17.215 --> 00:35:19.695
- a creator, you're also a consumer. So take

959
00:35:19.695 --> 00:35:22.594
- that consumer mindset into what you are making.

960
00:35:22.655 --> 00:35:24.195
- Mhmm. That that would be

961
00:35:24.494 --> 00:35:26.175
- a a core piece of advice that I

962
00:35:26.175 --> 00:35:27.554
- would give podcasters

963
00:35:27.855 --> 00:35:28.594
- right now.

964
00:35:30.440 --> 00:35:31.339
- Sure. And,

965
00:35:31.719 --> 00:35:33.179
- you know, like I say, it's,

966
00:35:34.280 --> 00:35:37.079
- we're we're part of that landscape. But as

967
00:35:37.079 --> 00:35:37.579
- podcasters

968
00:35:38.119 --> 00:35:39.980
- or podcast consumers or

969
00:35:40.599 --> 00:35:43.675
- Netflix users, you know, whatever. It's all part

970
00:35:43.675 --> 00:35:44.894
- of the same ecosystem

971
00:35:45.195 --> 00:35:45.695
- now,

972
00:35:46.235 --> 00:35:47.534
- and we need to

973
00:35:48.474 --> 00:35:50.155
- do that. And, you know, Blueberry's got some

974
00:35:50.155 --> 00:35:52.394
- pretty exciting stuff if you wanna play with

975
00:35:52.394 --> 00:35:52.894
- video

976
00:35:53.400 --> 00:35:54.619
- coming very soon,

977
00:35:55.079 --> 00:35:55.480
- so,

978
00:35:56.039 --> 00:35:57.900
- stay tuned for that. But

979
00:35:58.679 --> 00:35:59.179
- Yeah.

980
00:35:59.719 --> 00:36:00.219
- Any

981
00:36:00.920 --> 00:36:02.679
- final words of wisdom on,

982
00:36:03.239 --> 00:36:06.199
- podcast consumption or media consumption? Or

983
00:36:06.984 --> 00:36:08.585
- no. I I I won't open it up

984
00:36:08.585 --> 00:36:09.324
- for complaints.

985
00:36:10.105 --> 00:36:10.605
- But

986
00:36:12.184 --> 00:36:14.445
- I I have a question because I'm curious.

987
00:36:15.464 --> 00:36:17.625
- Have either one of you and maybe our

988
00:36:17.625 --> 00:36:19.945
- listeners too. Can you leave a comment, chime

989
00:36:19.945 --> 00:36:22.800
- in, email Mike McKenzie or myself?

990
00:36:23.199 --> 00:36:25.300
- Yeah. I wanna know, have you ever

991
00:36:25.599 --> 00:36:28.099
- listened to or watched a podcast

992
00:36:29.119 --> 00:36:29.619
- from

993
00:36:30.719 --> 00:36:34.000
- a platform like Netflix or Disney plus or

994
00:36:34.000 --> 00:36:36.315
- Hulu or anything like that? Because that is

995
00:36:36.315 --> 00:36:38.954
- becoming more popular. But I won't wanna say

996
00:36:38.954 --> 00:36:39.454
- popular.

997
00:36:39.914 --> 00:36:42.554
- It's happening more often. Yeah. It's happening more

998
00:36:42.554 --> 00:36:44.255
- often. I wouldn't say popular.

999
00:36:45.034 --> 00:36:46.574
- Yeah. You'll you'll have,

1000
00:36:46.875 --> 00:36:47.534
- you know,

1001
00:36:48.234 --> 00:36:49.679
- you know, Daredevil

1002
00:36:49.980 --> 00:36:52.640
- just came out with season two, and,

1003
00:36:53.900 --> 00:36:56.640
- now there's a Daredevil Born Again podcast

1004
00:36:57.099 --> 00:37:00.159
- about every episode. Have either of you two

1005
00:37:00.219 --> 00:37:00.719
- ever

1006
00:37:01.500 --> 00:37:02.880
- checked one of those out?

1007
00:37:03.785 --> 00:37:05.405
- I'll let you go first, Mackenzie.

1008
00:37:06.184 --> 00:37:08.505
- You mean, like, the, the, you know, the

1009
00:37:08.505 --> 00:37:10.605
- podcast about the TV show or whatever?

1010
00:37:11.065 --> 00:37:12.045
- Yeah. Yeah.

1011
00:37:12.585 --> 00:37:13.885
- Yes. I have.

1012
00:37:14.184 --> 00:37:14.664
- There was

1013
00:37:16.190 --> 00:37:18.269
- oh my god. I'm I'm dating myself. I

1014
00:37:18.269 --> 00:37:20.030
- sound like Mike saying I'm dating myself. But

1015
00:37:20.030 --> 00:37:20.690
- I remember

1016
00:37:21.230 --> 00:37:22.690
- in 2013,

1017
00:37:23.710 --> 00:37:24.210
- listening

1018
00:37:24.750 --> 00:37:25.710
- 2012,

1019
00:37:25.710 --> 00:37:26.610
- 2011,

1020
00:37:26.670 --> 00:37:27.630
- like, 2013,

1021
00:37:27.869 --> 00:37:29.730
- listening to a lot of Breaking Bad podcasts.

1022
00:37:30.605 --> 00:37:33.344
- Yeah. There was not, like, an official one

1023
00:37:33.724 --> 00:37:35.885
- through AMC at that time because that was

1024
00:37:35.885 --> 00:37:38.204
- not a thing. But I remember listening to

1025
00:37:38.204 --> 00:37:40.204
- a lot of, like, fan ones. And then

1026
00:37:40.204 --> 00:37:41.414
- I have listened to,

1027
00:37:44.070 --> 00:37:46.570
- there was a last of us podcast

1028
00:37:46.869 --> 00:37:48.010
- that the creator,

1029
00:37:49.430 --> 00:37:51.030
- the creator of the show, the creator of

1030
00:37:51.030 --> 00:37:52.710
- the game, and then the main character in

1031
00:37:52.710 --> 00:37:54.710
- the game did together. And I listened to

1032
00:37:54.710 --> 00:37:56.250
- that for season one. And then,

1033
00:37:57.670 --> 00:37:58.170
- HBO

1034
00:37:59.175 --> 00:38:01.255
- does podcast for, like, a lot of their

1035
00:38:01.255 --> 00:38:03.335
- shows now. So I've listened to some random

1036
00:38:03.335 --> 00:38:03.835
- episodes,

1037
00:38:05.175 --> 00:38:05.994
- about that.

1038
00:38:06.454 --> 00:38:08.695
- Is that right on the platform that you're

1039
00:38:08.695 --> 00:38:09.835
- watching the show?

1040
00:38:10.535 --> 00:38:12.295
- So the when I was listening to The

1041
00:38:12.295 --> 00:38:13.974
- Last of Us, no. I would go listen

1042
00:38:13.974 --> 00:38:15.199
- on my phone. Mhmm.

1043
00:38:16.300 --> 00:38:17.440
- I have watched,

1044
00:38:18.780 --> 00:38:19.519
- I think,

1045
00:38:19.900 --> 00:38:20.400
- like,

1046
00:38:20.780 --> 00:38:21.280
- maybe

1047
00:38:21.900 --> 00:38:24.000
- the, like, three or four minute

1048
00:38:24.780 --> 00:38:25.280
- extras

1049
00:38:25.739 --> 00:38:28.175
- that show after the HBO show

1050
00:38:28.795 --> 00:38:30.175
- that are part of the podcast

1051
00:38:30.555 --> 00:38:31.535
- Mhmm. I think.

1052
00:38:32.235 --> 00:38:32.974
- And then,

1053
00:38:34.635 --> 00:38:35.914
- I was just over at my friend's house

1054
00:38:35.914 --> 00:38:37.434
- the other day, and we were scrolling through

1055
00:38:37.434 --> 00:38:39.355
- Netflix. Then it has, like, a whole section

1056
00:38:39.355 --> 00:38:41.130
- for podcast that I have not listened to,

1057
00:38:41.130 --> 00:38:42.969
- but we were, like, scrolling through. And then

1058
00:38:42.969 --> 00:38:44.730
- we were like, we are not in the

1059
00:38:44.809 --> 00:38:46.489
- this is, like, not the type of mood

1060
00:38:46.489 --> 00:38:47.710
- that we're in right now.

1061
00:38:48.089 --> 00:38:50.409
- So no. Yeah. I've heard they're not doing

1062
00:38:50.409 --> 00:38:52.750
- great over there. So but god.

1063
00:38:53.050 --> 00:38:55.385
- I'm gonna go back to Star Trek because

1064
00:38:55.605 --> 00:38:58.425
- that's my that's my experience of that.

1065
00:38:58.724 --> 00:38:59.625
- But on Paramount,

1066
00:39:00.644 --> 00:39:02.485
- there you know, that's where all the Star

1067
00:39:02.485 --> 00:39:03.625
- Treks are now.

1068
00:39:04.085 --> 00:39:05.385
- It's on Paramount Plus.

1069
00:39:05.684 --> 00:39:07.304
- And they have a

1070
00:39:07.844 --> 00:39:08.744
- after show

1071
00:39:10.349 --> 00:39:10.849
- podcast

1072
00:39:11.230 --> 00:39:15.150
- style video. So I I don't believe it's

1073
00:39:15.150 --> 00:39:16.369
- distributed VRSS

1074
00:39:16.670 --> 00:39:18.529
- anywhere, but if it is, I might

1075
00:39:18.909 --> 00:39:19.889
- check it out. But

1076
00:39:20.750 --> 00:39:23.549
- so anytime they're premiering a new series, so,

1077
00:39:23.549 --> 00:39:26.144
- like, there's 10 episodes of Strange New Worlds

1078
00:39:26.144 --> 00:39:27.525
- coming up here really soon.

1079
00:39:27.905 --> 00:39:29.445
- And after every one,

1080
00:39:30.065 --> 00:39:33.184
- they'll have a show with, Wil Wheaton, if

1081
00:39:33.184 --> 00:39:35.744
- you know who he is. Yeah. He played

1082
00:39:35.744 --> 00:39:38.005
- Wesley Crusher on Next Gen. Anyway,

1083
00:39:38.670 --> 00:39:39.409
- he interviews

1084
00:39:39.949 --> 00:39:40.449
- actors

1085
00:39:41.469 --> 00:39:42.130
- from that

1086
00:39:42.589 --> 00:39:45.170
- episode, and they talk about that episode.

1087
00:39:46.030 --> 00:39:48.449
- Right after the episode goes live,

1088
00:39:48.750 --> 00:39:49.889
- that goes live.

1089
00:39:50.349 --> 00:39:52.375
- And I, you know, I I don't think

1090
00:39:52.375 --> 00:39:54.795
- it's a true podcast, but it's very podcast

1091
00:39:54.934 --> 00:39:55.434
- style.

1092
00:39:56.215 --> 00:39:59.015
- Yeah. And, Yeah. You know, and, you know,

1093
00:39:59.015 --> 00:40:00.695
- so I always end up watching the after

1094
00:40:00.695 --> 00:40:03.115
- show after the show. You know?

1095
00:40:03.655 --> 00:40:04.155
- Right.

1096
00:40:05.159 --> 00:40:07.719
- Yeah. I I remember I was gonna say,

1097
00:40:07.719 --> 00:40:10.460
- oh, no. I've never listened or watched anything

1098
00:40:10.519 --> 00:40:12.199
- on those platforms. But I was like, no.

1099
00:40:12.199 --> 00:40:13.019
- I do remember,

1100
00:40:14.519 --> 00:40:17.319
- when the most recent season of Peacekeeper came

1101
00:40:17.319 --> 00:40:19.179
- out on HBO Max.

1102
00:40:19.704 --> 00:40:21.625
- I just watched a random one, and I

1103
00:40:21.625 --> 00:40:23.964
- was like, I'd rather listen to this.

1104
00:40:24.585 --> 00:40:26.505
- I don't I don't really wanna watch a

1105
00:40:26.505 --> 00:40:28.984
- couple, you know, a few people talk about

1106
00:40:28.984 --> 00:40:30.664
- the show that I just watched. Mhmm. I'll

1107
00:40:30.664 --> 00:40:31.804
- just listen to it.

1108
00:40:32.630 --> 00:40:34.410
- But I do, like, you know,

1109
00:40:34.789 --> 00:40:36.969
- early days, like, when The Walking Dead was

1110
00:40:37.910 --> 00:40:39.849
- at at, like, its height of popularity,

1111
00:40:40.150 --> 00:40:41.530
- I was listening to,

1112
00:40:42.150 --> 00:40:43.690
- you know, an unofficial

1113
00:40:45.045 --> 00:40:47.444
- show about that. So, yeah, I didn't mean

1114
00:40:47.444 --> 00:40:49.625
- to get us off into a huge topic.

1115
00:40:49.844 --> 00:40:52.085
- Yeah. That's alright. That's It's it's I'm just

1116
00:40:52.085 --> 00:40:53.844
- curious because I I was like, I don't

1117
00:40:53.844 --> 00:40:55.045
- know that I've done that. And I guess

1118
00:40:55.045 --> 00:40:57.059
- I am guilty of it. But Yeah. Yeah.

1119
00:40:57.140 --> 00:40:58.739
- And that you know, that's kind of the

1120
00:40:58.739 --> 00:41:01.480
- format we're going for here is a conversation

1121
00:41:02.019 --> 00:41:03.400
- amongst us, not

1122
00:41:03.860 --> 00:41:06.260
- just us preaching to you. And we're gonna

1123
00:41:06.260 --> 00:41:08.340
- get other team members on here as well.

1124
00:41:08.340 --> 00:41:10.099
- It's not gonna just be the three of

1125
00:41:10.099 --> 00:41:10.599
- us.

1126
00:41:12.035 --> 00:41:14.454
- The the goal is to, you know, whatever

1127
00:41:14.914 --> 00:41:15.414
- particular

1128
00:41:15.875 --> 00:41:18.855
- subject comes up for that episode, we're gonna,

1129
00:41:19.394 --> 00:41:21.394
- you know, find the best people on our

1130
00:41:21.394 --> 00:41:23.315
- team to to talk about. And and it'd

1131
00:41:23.315 --> 00:41:24.675
- be nice for you guys to get to

1132
00:41:24.675 --> 00:41:25.175
- know

1133
00:41:25.900 --> 00:41:27.260
- the rest of the team here. You know,

1134
00:41:27.260 --> 00:41:28.800
- it's not just the three of us,

1135
00:41:30.300 --> 00:41:31.119
- here at Blueberry.

1136
00:41:31.420 --> 00:41:32.559

1139

- spelled it wrong because we can't afford these.

1140
00:41:41.264 --> 00:41:41.744
- But,

1141
00:41:42.224 --> 00:41:43.364
- any final words,

1142
00:41:43.664 --> 00:41:44.164
- again?

00:41:45.025 --> 00:41:46.565

00:41:50.625 --> 00:41:52.405
- Hey. Well, hey. Thanks for
