Speaker 0 00:00:00 I'm really excited about this one and the, the integration being able to do both Apple Podcast and premium podcasting at the same time. There was, we've had a, a list of people that have been waiting for this for a while, so I'm excited to see this get off the ground and people to be able to implement this. And I really don't have to use any third party services and even folks that have been using Power Press with some sort of membership plugin now. Their big hassle was always integrating Stripe or PayPal or some sort of payment platform, which was always seemed to be the, it's

Speaker 1 00:00:35 Always clunky,

Speaker 0 00:00:36 The clunky part of it, and we've taken care of that. We manage the subscriptions for you and collect the money and, and then distribute payment. You're listening to Podcast Insider hosted by Mike Dell, Todd Cochran, and Mackenzie Bennett from the Blueberry team bring you weekly insights, advice, and insider tips and tricks to help you start, grow and thrive through podcasting. All with the support of your team here at Blueberry Podcasting. Welcome. Let's dive in.

Speaker 3 00:01:07 I'm Mackenzie Bennett, marketing specialist here at Blueberry.

Speaker 1 00:01:09 And I'm Mike Dell, the VP of Customer Relations here at Blueberry.

Speaker 0 00:01:14 And I'm Todd Cochrane, CEO, and founder of Blueberry Podcasting. Today, we're going to look back on 2023 and review all the features we've added and some of the other things we've done this year. Well, I'm gonna tell you, it's been a big year. The whole team's been busy, and if we look back at the list, matter of fact, I was kinda reviewing the whole roadmap for 2023 and it was just like, oh, oh my goodness, look what we have done. And it, it's quite a list, isn't it?

Speaker 1 00:01:46 Hell yeah. And we still got more to come, but, uh, yeah, it's, it's something that I'm sure we're missing something. I, there's been things that came out that we didn't make a whole lot of hoopla about. So ,

Speaker 3 00:01:59 I'd say I'm just proud of what we've done this year. Like we're little, we're looking at the list, but in terms of what we actually got out there for people, I'm happy with what we chose to provide them.

Speaker 0 00:02:11 And not only that, it's the amount of social documentation, all, all the other content that we've added to the website, especially in the last quarter of the year has been pretty tremendous. But I guess we can just go down the list and, and talk about probably the, the, the highlights. And the first thing that we came up the gate with was the, the Apple Podcast subscriptions and making it available for podcasters to monetize their podcast over on Apple Publishing through the blueberry dashboard. And that was, that was a pretty big effort.

Speaker 1 00:02:48 Oh yeah. We spent lots of time with Apple in meetings and, and the dev team worked with their dev team and we got it done. I think we're still one of about four or five companies that, that do this. So

Speaker 0 00:03:03 Yeah, I, I think there was two added in the last couple of weeks, but, you know, we did this at the beginning of the year and here it's almost the end of December and they've, the other companies are just getting around to do it. So I feel pretty good that we're that far ahead in, in the list. Of course, quick Links was something that we put together, and matter of fact, we're, we're gonna refresh Quick links almost the next probably month or two with some new features as well. So for those that don't know, quick Links is where you can have, uh, a link at podcast show board slash your keyword to be able to promote your show. It's just kind of a, almost like a Link Tree type of replacement. A little more than that at this point, but yeah, that was, that was put in place as well.

Speaker 1 00:03:48 Yeah, and that's a, that's just a, a quick easy to say thing that you can put in your show. You know, you say go to, like, in this case our Quick Links page is, uh, podcast show slash podcast. Since we built it, we got to get the good keyword.

Speaker 0 00:04:05 Yeah, we ca we, we captured the, the major keyword. So go ahead. What's, what was next on the list?

Speaker 3 00:04:10 Media Mastering by Onic. We partnered with them to have just an integration in our system where people can use Onic to master their media before the episode is finalized. But it's a really easy solution of they just upload the file to us, we do all the work in the background, and then it just goes out.

Speaker 0 00:04:33 I'm pretty excited that this was put in place because for many years I used the software version of Onic and matter of fact, they are not updating that version of software anymore. They want you to use their cloud-based solution. Yeah. So you can't even, you can't even get the software version of a phonic anymore. And I think I paid 3 49 or something like that for the commercial license.

Speaker 1 00:04:56 Yeah, it's up there. I I have it as well. And, and lately I've just been using Mastering 'cause it's so much, uh, easier. You, yeah, click one tick mark, uh, in the uploader and you can upload the wave too. You don't even have to convert to MP three if you don't want to.

Speaker 0 00:05:10 Yeah, that's actually the best way to do it too, because I've taken the, now basically when I get done with my Wave file, I just save it in the show name and upload it, and then I'm essentially working on show notes. And by the time I'm done with the show notes, the, the media's mastered. And for those of you that don't know what a phonic does, but this media mastering it, it levels your media, it removes noise, there's a whole bunch of settings for it, and they're, they're world class and we're really, really happy to be integrated with them. And it's a, it's a great add-on, and it literally saves me probably 10 minutes per episode in the publishing process.

Speaker 1 00:05:48 Yeah, and, and what, what's really nice about, like, with this episode, we're recording here, it'll go through Onic and, and our editing team and all that stuff, but you know, Todd McKenzie and I are all in different places with different microphones and different levels. We don't have to worry so much about the leveling when we're recording. We do a pretty good job, but this just really tweaks it so that you're not reaching for the volume knob every time Todd talks and, and so on and so forth. So it's pretty, pretty handy.

Speaker 0 00:06:23 And let's go ahead and move on. What's next on the list?

Speaker 1 00:06:25 Yeah, we did a lot with Podcasting 2.0, of course, we talk about that a lot. So it's been kind of an ongoing process, but we did get value for value in this year. And also the live tag, the, the, so where you can notify people that you're going live, but the value for value tag is a way to stream Satoshi, which are micro payments of Bitcoin to your favorite podcaster, or you get them from your listeners. And you can also send Boosto grams, which are kind of like paid comments or super chats on YouTube or something like that. But we, we've made it really easy with a partnership with Albi and, or get Albi and you can link your G get ALB wallet or your Fountain wallet or if you have a Lightning address, you just do it whatever address you got. And, and it works pretty seamlessly.

Speaker 0 00:07:24 And there's a whole bunch of other features that we've added as well that just goes beyond what Mike has talked about here initially. We have a whole page that is basically dedicated to talking about all the, all the features that are out there. And, um, I'm pretty, uh, pretty pleased that we're, we're one of the top adopters of the podcasting 2.0 initiative to expand the capability of RSS and bring lots of cool features to lots of, uh, new podcast apps@podcastapps.com.

Speaker 1 00:07:58 And the beauty of that is that, that none of this stuff is required. It's just adding value to your feed, to apps that use it. It's great. And I've, I've actually had a lot of people switch to us because of our support for Podcast 2.0 or Podcasting 2.0.

Speaker 0 00:08:19 One of the most exciting products that we brought online is an add-on called the Thrive Bundle. And the Thrive Bundle is exciting in that we are continuing to add more features to the Thrive Bundle. And we first launched it, I think we only had four features. Three

Speaker 1 00:08:37 Or four, yeah,

Speaker 0 00:08:38 Yeah. But we've continued to add more products to it and more, I mean, basically it's just additional features that were, we're, we're adding on and we're gonna add some more stuff to the Thrive Bundle in the next quarter or so. And what happens there is if you've got the Thrive Bundle, you've already got the ability to do dynamic ad insertion, pre-roll in the stats, you can compare, do episode comparison of up to five episodes versus the three you get not on. You can track listeners and subscribers. That's a whole new chart that you only get in Thrive in Stats. Average Daily Plays is another one where you get a unique metric. We've added the ability for you to have additional information within Quick links with hyperlinks, value for value and analytic stuff in Quick Links. We've got Apple Podcast reviews within the blueberry stats dashboard is allow, uh, also there, and again, this is a, an A bundle add-on that is available for a $10 a month added to your hosting plan.

Speaker 0 00:09:45 And again, we're gonna continue to add value to the, the Thrive bundle that allow you to get more value at over that over time. And it's, I I think right now the plan is, is to continue to add features to it, because again, this isn't, this is incremental stuff that's just onesie twosies here and there on different products where you get a little bit in stats, you get something in Add insertion. Not everyone needs all these things, but at the same time, if we add enough value, there might be three or four of those features that we've, uh, added in the Thrive Bundle that, uh, makes it worth that extra $10 a month.

Speaker 3 00:10:23 One of the next things that we added this year was we didn't update to our stats. We added some more data points so that you're getting more out of your stats without having to get the Thrive Bundle. There is not good information in there, but some of this we just added, we were like, this is just new and relevant information. We have it, let's just add it to the current plans that we already have.

Speaker 0 00:10:47 And stats is something that's continually looked at, and if you're listening to this, you say, wow, Todd, I I really wish that you had this as a stats component. Feel free to drop us a line@supportatblueberry.com and say, Hey, I wish we wish we had this in the stats. And these types of inputs we get from those of you that are using our services really go pretty high on the list on what we should adopt, because usually more than one person's thinking about the same type of an idea. So when we get these ideas, we put 'em in a bucket and, and keep track of 'em, and then they go into our overall timeline of, of adding features to the service. Something fun that we added was, uh, badges and achievements. And basically what what we have really found is that we've gamified some of the features within Blueberry to say, if you adopt this, you get this badge. If you reach this level of number of episodes published, you get this badge and certain achievements. So the badges and achievements is fun because it allows you to take those awards and take the embed of those, those and put 'em on your website if you want to. And, and we even have event badges where we went to podcast movement and there was a badge,

Speaker 1 00:12:00 Right? And if you come and visit us at an event, we'll give you a badge for that. So yeah, it's, it is a lot of fun. We, we spent quite a bit of time figuring out what badges we wanted to use, and of course, Aaron, our, uh, graphic artist did a really great job making those things look good. And yeah, it's, it's, it's a really cool thing if you, if you haven't played with it, it's right there in your dashboard when you sign into Blueberry.

Speaker 0 00:12:25 Our directory had been pretty, I guess for a better words, I wouldn't say stagnant, but basically we didn't have the full directory of podcast in it for a long, long time. And we made an initiative to update the directory now to include, I think 3.5 million podcasts are in the directory at this point. So the directory now has a full list of shows and it's maintained actively and updated. So that is one of those things, one of those initiatives. As a matter of fact, it's ongoing. It's a, it's a thing that we, we look at on a, basically almost a weekly basis to make sure it's updated and clean so that you can find all the shows at within our directory. If you use our directory,

Speaker 1 00:13:05 I believe we pull both from Apple and Podcast Index.

Speaker 0 00:13:10 Yeah, I believe so as well.

Speaker 3 00:13:12 One of my favorite things that we did this year was we released a podcast stats, P-W-A-A-K-A, a way for people to access and review their stats on their phone in like a, basically in a mobile app, we've always had people saying like, I want this data now. And just given that it's a lot of information, we were very happy to be able to put it into a mobile access that is just really simple to understand. It's clean, it's accessible for everyone. So I thought that one was really cool.

Speaker 1 00:13:47 Yeah. And that's an example of something that people have asked for through, you know, asking us, Hey, you know, here, I, I would like to have this. And, and that's one of those examples. And the next one, uh, the playlist players.

Speaker 0 00:14:03 I do, I do wanna add something to the stats PWA. So those of you that haven't implemented this, you can essentially, when you add the stats PWA to your mobile device, you have an icon, right? As a, as a normal app, right. On your mobile device. And you click the blueberry icon and it loads stats in a PWA. So basically you don't have to log into Blueberry or anything. It's, it's the regular icon is right on.

Speaker 1 00:14:29 Yeah, it looks like an app, but likes

Speaker 0 00:14:32 An app. Yeah, it's an app. It's an, yeah, it's a, it's a, it's a mobile PWA app, but again, you have the, in the app, right, on your, on your mobile device, whether it's Android or iOS.

Speaker 3 00:14:41 But to get it, you have to download it and get it from being logged into Blueberry. It's not something you can go to the app store and get it functions like something you would get from the App store, but that's not where you are actually acquiring it.

Speaker 0 00:14:55 Yeah. You, you acquire it right in the stats menu. And if you've had tr

Speaker 1 00:14:59 There's a popup that comes up towards the bottom of the screen and just click that away you go.

Speaker 0 00:15:05 And if you've had any troubles accessing that, let us know. We wanna make sure you get access to it.

Speaker 1 00:15:10 Yeah, and like I said, the another example of a requested feature, it was an embeddable playlist player. Now we've always had that within PowerPress where, but the player had to be within the same website that you're generating here podcast with. So what we did is we made an actual iframe in bed that you can use, whether you're using Blueberry Publisher or Power Press, and that can be put on any page. Also along with a playlist player, we have a latest episode player, so if you just wanna landing page, you throw that in bed for the latest episode player. And so your latest episode will always be on that page.

Speaker 0 00:15:54 And this is one of those features that was kind of lingering for a while. We had, like Mike said, we had this playlist player build in a power press, but it wasn't super functional, it just listed like the last 10 episodes. And with this new player, we've got options. Again, like Mike said, for you to be able to set the number of episodes you want to be shown again, if you just want that most current episode to play or to be displayed. So it's, it's quite the improvement. And if you haven't messed with that, get into the dashboard and, and grab it and grab the embed and, and drop it on your website. Or if you have a, a partner, maybe they go on a partner page. One of our, one of our big, big projects this year, and we've got a variety of third party services that maybe a lot of you don't know about, but Podcast Mirror is a product that we've had, I think since about 2017 or so. Yes.

Speaker 1 00:16:46 Something like that. Yeah.

Speaker 0 00:16:47 And it was a free service. And what we've determined was, is that with everything else happening in the world, it was time to update it. And number two, we improved it to a point where we felt there was enough added value to make it a paid service. So Podcast Mirror was improved, it was, uh, implemented with a lot of podcast 2.0 stuff that allows folks that are on hosting platforms that do not have any podcasting two point implementation, they can get a half dozen or so Podcast 2.0 features as well as a little more integrated, uh, service. So we switched that to a paid service. And matter of fact, the free users ran out here a few days ago, so now the, the service is 100% premium. But I think those, you do

Speaker 1 00:17:35 Get it if you are hosting with Blueberry,

Speaker 0 00:17:37 Yeah, you're hosting with, that's great. But one thing I will mention, if you're hosting with us, especially if you're hosting on the Blueberry dashboard, there's really no reason to use Mirror unless you want the flexibility of being able to potentially move host later. But as a hosting customer, you do get it for free as part of the service, but you really, if again, if you're using the dashboard, you really don't need it. Now if you might, if you're a Power Press user and you might wanna consider it if, especially on a low cost hosting plan, and that was, was was really initially designed for, was folks that were on a very inexpensive hosting plan that was getting hit too hard on their, on their RS assessments. WordPress, yeah, yeah,

Speaker 1 00:18:22 Yeah. And the, the thing is that the feeds that come from Blueberry publisher are really exactly the same technology as smear under the hood. So there's no advantage other than, like Todd said, potentially switching hosts, but we hope you don't do that.

Speaker 0 00:18:37 And matter of fact, if you are on the dashboard, you get more, there's more features. In other words, on the podcasting two point implementation, there's some stuff we can't carry over from the dashboard to mirror. So Dashboard is always the best place to implement any podcast 2.0 features. 'cause you get the whole stack, not the half dozen or so that we were able to implement on Mirror.

Speaker 1 00:19:00 And then the last one here is premium podcasting. And similar to what Apple does we did at the beginning of the year, we've sort of replicated that in a way, uh, with other apps that can use password protected feeds. That's been an ask for a long time too. We've always supported it in Power Press, but this is a complete solution. It's a $10 add-on, plus we take a cut of, of your subscriptions. But you publish your, your premium episodes, your paid episodes, whether it be for, you know, early release exclusive content or add free versions, uh, whatever you wanna do there. And what's nice about it is you can do it right in the same, uh, post or the same episode post. You can do Apple Blueberry Premium and public all in one.

Speaker 0 00:20:00 And I think that was, uh, what people thought. So far, the feedback I've gotten has been the most innovative piece is if you are already publishing to Apple Podcast subscriptions or Apple Premium by having the Blueberry Premium podcasting, you basically have two ways now to monetize your content. They can do it through Apple directly or you could do it through Blueberry. Now the Mike mentioned that the add-on was $10 a month. We do take 15%. So 15% for all the, and we take care of all the credit card processing fees, everything goes along with that. So if you have a $10, you set your, your premium podcasting at 10 bucks, you'll get eight 50 from us on a monthly basis.

Speaker 1 00:20:46 I think Apple takes 30, don't

Speaker 0 00:20:48 They? They, I think they take 30. The first year might be lower. Don't quote me on that. Yeah,

Speaker 1 00:20:53 I don't know for

Speaker 0 00:20:54 Sure either . Yeah. But definitely it's a way where you, and you give, we give you a landing page too as a podcaster. You get a a a landing page to send your potential premium podcasting customers to. I'm, I'm really excited about this one and the, the integration being able to do both Apple Podcasts and premium podcasting at the same time. There was, we've had a, a list of people that have been waiting for this for a while. So I'm excited to see this get off the ground and people be able to implement this. And I really don't have to use any third party services. And even folks that have been using PowerPress with some sort of membership plugin now, their big hassle was always integrating Stripe or PayPal or some sort of payment platform, which was always seemed to be the,

Speaker 1 00:21:43 It's always clunky,

Speaker 0 00:21:45 The clunky part of it. And we've taken care of that. We manage the subscriptions for you and collect the money and, and then distribute payments. So yeah, I'm really, really excited about premium podcasting. And again, we, that's been on the street now for just, just a little while. So it's a brand new product.

Speaker 1 00:22:03 So of course we talked about a lot of the podcast 2.0 stuff, but we've been slowly adding all kinds of different features to Podcast 2.0 or, and we call 'em features. And that's the thing, a lot of people, a lot of people call 'em tags and this and that and, and, and that's, that's kind of geeky. So we've kind of integrated them like our transcripts, that's part of podcasting 2.0, which we did last year. And to our podcasters, they don't necessarily know that that's Podcast 2.0. It's just a, a cool feature . And so we, we definitely have put some effort into that. And of course we're working on more.

Speaker 0 00:22:48 So McKenzie, we've had a whole bunch of other activities go on this year. You wanna get into any of that or did you have something to add? I'm sorry.

Speaker 3 00:22:55 No, just about the podcasting 2.0. So like it's, Mike, you said like it gets pretty geeky and that's like great for you and you and Todd like you, you love discussing that. For me, I think it's just like, I understand it and I can appreciate what all of these different like initiatives behind it, like all these different tag items and why they exist and why they're trying to implement them. But I think it's gonna be a slow adoption. It's, that's really what it's gonna be. It's not gonna be a creator adoption. Like initially it's gonna be companies have to provide these options for people to actually wanna do it. There is, there is a lot of interest in what these tags are like, the funding, the locking, the, the value for value, all of these things. It just has to be very simple for people to actually be able to do. And I think by us doing that, and by hopefully in 2024 we see more hosting companies implement it in a simple, easy to understand way as well, then things will happen.

Speaker 0 00:23:56 It's one of the reasons why we've built everything to this point to make it, it's basically a feature and we've tried to completely remove the geek. I understand the geek, the average podcaster does not need to understand the geek ery. They need to understand, they need to understand the purpose. What is this going to do for me? And ultimately, and as these features are adopted in more apps, and I think now there's about a half dozen apps or have most of these features, is that your, the ultimate goal, the ultimate goal of the initiative is to keep your listeners in the app and at the same time being able to interact with you, the host within the app across a variety of features. And basically it's, it's really, it's a partnership, um, multi-level partnership that there's benefits for the app developers, there's benefits for the, the podcaster. There's, there's benefits for the listener. And in the end what it really, really boils down to is this, it's a multifaceted collaboration. It's just not us putting out features. It's also apps de deploying these features within, within the apps or even on some websites. Now in the future, we're gonna be coming out with some cool stuff that will actually help you take some of those features and, and promote 'em in your own way. And I guess I won't go too much into, into that, but I think the

Speaker 3 00:25:27 Skunkworks

Speaker 0 00:25:28 the, yeah, the ultimately though, as Mackenzie as you said, this is a slow roll adoption and there's the chicken and the egg thing and what we really decided to be was the chicken and basically making sure that everything was in place so that as the egg was dropped , then it basically, the egg can be cooked and it can be utilized across these different platforms. 'cause if we hadn't adopted it, the, the apps wouldn't. So we decided to be a leader along with four or five other hosting companies and adapting these features to be able to take advantage, basically feed the Feed the Beast, I guess is the better way. Feed the system.

Speaker 3 00:26:09 We have never shied away from implementing something that it seems a little know over the top for someone that we think could have great adoption in the future.

Speaker 0 00:26:20 Yeah. And we know this is gonna be a couple of years up ramp. I have no, no doubt. But there's some stuff that's pretty cool and I just recommend if you're trying to say understand what we're doing is to go to the podcasting 2.0 introduction page and just read through and there might be three, four things there that you say, wow, that I should implement that you don't have to do 'em all, but some of are set and forget. So that's the beauty of . And

Speaker 1 00:26:44 Some of 'em are under the hood too, that you, you're already participating and you don't know it . Yeah,

Speaker 0 00:26:48 You don't dunno. So we also had a big team meeting in June, got together that didn't, that basically drove a lot of our development for the last half of the year. But we had an end of a chapter too. We closed the office and, uh, Mackenzie, how much furniture have we got left to sell? A little bit still,

Speaker 3 00:27:04 We have a little bit left. So if anyone is looking for some significant office furniture, we have a beautiful l-shaped desk and two combined dual desks. I, so that's about it. Otherwise we, we cleaned house in that office. So many people, like so many people on our team were able to take equipment home with them. It was, it was just like a, a nice ending to what was a very successful and fun office in person. But we've just shifted with the world. Yeah.

Speaker 1 00:27:39 And that, what, is there two people left in Columbus now?

Speaker 3 00:27:42 Yes.

Speaker 0 00:27:44 And, and that, that Jack and Jill, I call it a Jack and Jill desk. Mm-Hmm. , I tell you, if I had a place for it, I'd have it. It's, it's, they're probably the nicest desk that we had in the office, but all of it was I think Schoolcraft or

Speaker 3 00:27:58 Steelcase.

Speaker 0 00:27:59 Yeah. Steelcase about $80,000 worth of furniture. And again, most of it went home with the employees and then we sold a portion of it. Yeah. So there's also, we attended some events, can't even remember all of them. Yeah,

Speaker 3 00:28:12 . Yeah, I was trying to put together a list, so thank Sure.

Speaker 1 00:28:15 There's a couple missing .

Speaker 3 00:28:17 So starting off like at the beginning of the year there was podcast and podcast movement evolutions. So I'd say those are January, February, March, sometime around that time. You guys attended those in April we had National Association of Broadcasters in Vegas. TD show. Yeah, we had a TD in May that we attended and then in Diego. So yeah, rounded it out with a podcast movement in Denver in August

Speaker 0 00:28:48 And then Lana attended AWS reinvent and was on a panel there. So even our dev team got in on the action, which is good.

Speaker 3 00:28:58 Oh yeah, they attended a, a conference in Austin as well not too long ago to just continue learning Yeah.

Speaker 1 00:29:04 PHP conference of some sort. So dev team doesn't always tell us what they're doing. Exactly. So ,

Speaker 0 00:29:10 Our, our first big event will be podcast in January. Mm-Hmm. . We're going to London in May. We're going to podcast movement evolutions, wherever that is. La l Yeah, LA And then we'll be somewhere else. I don't know if it's in Vegas or where podcast movement is.

Speaker 3 00:29:33 I wanna say dc

Speaker 0 00:29:34 DC oh maybe it is in dc Mm-Hmm. . We are not going to be going to NAB in April, though. We're, we're dropping that conference. Just not enough. ROI. So I might end up sure about

Speaker 1 00:29:45 ATD either.

Speaker 0 00:29:46 Yeah. I might end up going to NAB myself, I don't know, but if it is, it'll be for be personal. It won't be company-wide. But other than that, I think we're, and we've had some other query inquiries, so if you have an event, let us know. We'd like to potentially participate. So I think that brings us, that was a pretty busy year.

Speaker 1 00:30:06 Yeah, definitely. And, and getting rid of the office I think has helped now that, that we're not paying that bill for one thing, but that's right. I think now we're getting a lot better at collaborating over Zoom and, and other ways and hopefully, we'll, we'll still have a in-person meeting every year.

Speaker 0 00:30:27 Yeah. My question is where are we gonna do it in Mexico or where are we gonna do it? Yeah,

Speaker 1 00:30:32 Some someplace Nice. Yeah,

Speaker 0 00:30:35 Someplace

Speaker 1 00:30:35 Warm. Either that or we'll go back to the old way and do Chicago in the winter.

Speaker 0 00:30:39 No, we're not doing that. . . Okay. So that's 2023. Thanks for joining us.
